The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period, so this piece of bloomery slag could date from any time between the Iron Age (800 BC) to the Medieval Period (1500 AD).

Three irregular fragments of iron bloomery waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600). All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal iron metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles. An incomplete wrought iron tanged arrowhead of Medieval dating (12th to 13th Centuries AD). The arrowhead has a triangular blade, with a lentoid cross section. The tang is circular sectioned and incomplete. The arrowhead is a mid brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of surface detail. There is minimal surface corrosion product (rust) present. The axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with an irregular shaped expanded blade that has a pronounced downward projection. A complete cast iron cannon ball, of 19th Century dating. The cannon ball is spherical in shape. It has a maximum diameter of 105 mm (4.1 inches) and weighs 4 kg (2.2 lbs). The circumference is approximately 32 cm (12.5 inches). The cannon ball is a mid to dark brown colour, with an even surface patina. Some traces of iron corrosion (rust) are present on the surface, but no lamination of the surface has occurred. The dimensions and weight would suggest that this cannon ball is a British 9 pdr.
