Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost intact cast bronze / copper alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date (1000 - 800 BC). The axe is almost complete (95%), with only a few chips missing from the edge of the blade. The original edge of the blade is not present so it is hard to determine how the blade extended outwards. The axe is sub rectangular in plan, with the edge of the cutting edge appears to expand / flare outwards to form an convex cutting edge. The expanded blade has a curved convex (crescent shaped) cutting edge which is relatively poorly preserved. The socket is sub square in cross section, wit…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy object, probably part of an axehead of Bronze Age date (c. 2500-800 BC). The fragment is likely of the blade end of the axehead with a transverse break across the body. The surviving section of the blade is crescent shaped and the object is triangular in profile, narrowing evenly from 4.89mm thick at the break to 0.96mm thick just before the edge of the blade. The cross section is more akin to a pointed oval. The object has a light green patina. Due to very little of the axe surviving, it is difficult to accurately identify the type of Bronz…

An incomplete cast copper alloy disc / plate brooch, probably of Anglo-Saxon date (7th to 9th Centuries AD). Less than 25% of the brooch is present, and consists of a small rim section of a plate style brooch. Part of the spring is present on the back of the fragment. The brooch fragment is irregular in plan and section. From the small section, it is possible to estimate the original rim diameter as 4 cm, with 17% present. It consists of a border, with a faint two strand guilloche (interlaced ropework) design. Each strand is double ply (split into two). The border area app…

The sherd consists of a bodysherd, in a dark micaeous rich fabric, with an organic temper. The exterior of the sherd has two rows of decoration. The top row consists of three (3) circular wheel stamps with a central cross, splitting the circle into four approximately equal sized quadrants. The lower row demonstrates two incised chevrons, each done with two V shapes. The two rows of decoration are separated by horizontal incised lines. Potter…
