Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A spindle whorl made of a rusty coloured fine grained sandstone. It is discoid in shape, with one face damaged resulting in the loss of the original surface on that side. It weighs 52.1 grams, with a diameter of 42.76mm. The central perforation is 9.93mm wide. It is 23.00mm thick. Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust p. 67) defines a spindle whorl as having a central perforation which has a minimum 5mm diameter, the diameter and thickness is even, the sides are smooth, and…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete whetstone of unknown date. The whetstone or hone is formed from a very fine grained sedimentary, mica rich sandstone or siltstone. It is a light grey colour. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with tapering sides. The cross-section is sub-rectangular. Five sides are finely smoothed, with one edge demonstrating a rough fracture. It measures 48.03mm long, 67.76mm wide and maximum thickness is 27.73mm. The minimum thickness is 11.70mm. It weighs 102.7 grams. Whetstones or hones are hard to date due to the fact that as it is a function artefact, shapes or styles do not tend to …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A single sub cuboid white stone probable tessera. The find consists of an sub cuboid tessera, probably made out of chalk or similar white stone. The top surface appears to be slightly polished which is the result of being walked over. The other surfaces are rough and irregular in shape. It measures 15.77mm long, 13.09mm wide and 13.23mm deep. It weighs 3.9 grams. The presence of tessera on a site indicates the probability of a mosaic pavement, and therefore a probable villa. If it definitely a tessera, then it is of Roman dating (1st to 4th …

A fragment of a polished stone axe which appears to have been reused as a pestle. The axe had an oval section, 52.6 x 32.6mm, one end of which shows a hackly fracture. The other ends shows the faceted wear typical of a stone pestle or hammer-stone. This has been locally damaged with the loss of a large chip. It has been made from a fine grained rock, grains of quartz being visible in a black matrix. It measures 61.89mm in length, 53.79mm wide and 32.89mm thick. It weighs 171.4 grams. Due to the functional nature of this artefact, it is hard to accurately date it. As it has bee…

A worked stone hub probably from a toy wheel, probably of Post Medieval to Modern dating (16th to 19th Centuries AD). The hub is sub circular in plan, and sub rectangular in cross section. It has been made from a fine grained mica rich sandstone. It has a central drilled perforation (hole) through the centre of the object, with an internal diameter of 6.19mm. There are a total of eight drilled impressions, regularly spaced around the edge of the object. It has been suggested that these would have been the sockets for the spokes of the wheel. The internal diameter of these impres…

An incomplete carved red sandstone face, of possible Medieval dating (1350 to 1450 AD). The back is rough, and has probably been broken off a larger piece of stone. The face has almond shaped eyes, a triangular nose and a slit open mouth. There are remains of a possible beard around his chin, and a possible crown ontop of his head. It is similar in style to the face of St Christopher from the statue at Norton Priory, stylistically dated to between 1375 and 1400 AD (Marrow, 2008, 316). A complete possible hand axe of possible Lower Palaeolithic dating (c. 480,000 BC -c. 130,000 BC). The hand axe is sub rectangular in plan. and sub oval in plan. Both front and back exhibit a central ridge, with possible diagonal ridges radiating out towards the edge. The hand axe has been severely weathered, with multiple little 'pock' marks present over the surface. This weathering makes it hard to determine whether it has been deliberately worked or whether it is natural. It has been made from a quartzite or similar stone. It measures 96.33 mm in length, 79.62 mm wide and 30.…
