A rimsherd of a wheel thrown ceramic samian vessel, of Roman dating (AD 40 to AD 120). The sherd consists of a rimsherd of a samian vessel, possibly from La Graufesenque in South Gaul, consistent with early Roman dating. No enough survives of the rim to estimate original diameter, but it is probably from a cup. The rim type is that of a upright flat. The sherd is 4.9 mm thick and weighs 1.2 g. Six Roman pottery sherds found in the same area. One is a body sherd of samian, decorated with a moulded dog or wolf running right. It is from either a Dragondorf 29 or 37 bowl (weight 3.3 grams). It dates from the first to third century AD. A second sherd of samian is from a mortarium, either a Dragondorf 43 or 45. It dates from the second to third centuries AD and is probably from East Gaul (weight 9.4 grams). The third is a local white ware mortaria, possibly Hartshill / Mancetter (Warwickshire) as that is a major mortarium production site in the region. …
