The two shorter edges are abraded and each retains the remains of a flat semi-circular lug that enabled the pommel to be secured to the pommel bar by means of rivets. The cast copper-alloy, openwork mount is in the form of a stylised bird of prey, shown in profile, crouched over and gripping a serpent. It dates to the early Anglo-Saxon period.
