Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lithic handaxe, knapped from mid grey flint, of probable Palaeolithic date. Flakes have been removed from both surfaces to shape the axe, which is oval in plan. It has an elongated lenticular cross section with pointed edges. The edges of the axe are damaged and worn. The surface of the axe is a creamy white colour, however the grey flint can be seen on the more recent damage to the axe. The axe is 93.7mm long, 81.1mm wide and is 24.4mm thick.

County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large, probable scraper knapped from a tertiary flint flake and dating from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age (4000-1000 BC). It is broadly ovoid in plan, opaque in the body with translucent edges and on a mid-gray, mottled flint. At the proximal end is a pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral face. This bears evidence of bulb preparation with a large removal running from the edge diagonally into the centre and several parallel removals across the edge. The flake has pronounced, visible ripples covering the whole ventral face. It is trapezoid in section with two arrises runnin…

The implement has a flat striking platform and pronounced bulb of percussion at the distal end of the object, with evident ripples visible on the ventral face. The dorsal face shows several parallel removals, the larger of which displays very pronounced rippled leading to a sharp hinge fracture. Possible failed leaf arrowhead of mid to dark grey flint with small pale mottles. The ventral face invasion retouch on both edges and a flake removal scar to the distal end. There is invasive parallel retouch on the dorsal face across the proximal end and the right edge. The bulb of percussion has been removed and the waves of percussion are faint. The distal end tapers in width, ending in a crescentic notch. The distal end is thicker than expected for an arrowhead and it is possible that faults in the flint meant that when attempting to thin the piece, the tip broke leaving the cr…
