Medieval French copper alloy jetton of the Shield of France ancient type. Shield/ triple stranded cross fleury design. Similar examples are illustrated in Mitchiner (1988:172), no. 433-434b. Probably issued under Charles VI (1380-1422) and dated to the early 1380's during the process of coinage and jetton reformation. The legend differs from the given examples which should read AVE MARIA GRACIA PEN (or PLI); this example has the repeating nonsense inscription IEREDE (or G) suggesting possibly a later production date or production at Tournai.
