An incomplete piece of worked quartzite stone identified by Mr John Lord at a public event held in Peterborough Museum on the 16th of July 2010. This worked stone is Palaeolithic in date. Found in the area of a Limestone quarry. One end of the stone has broken off transversely. The tool has a flattened back and three facets to the upper surface. The tool tapers to a rounded point. The largest facet on the upper surface has a width of c.17.92mm, the central facet has a width of c.18.03mm and the final facet is c. 8.53mm wide. If this stone had been made into a tool then it would have o…

A worked Metapodial bone probably from a sheep or goat. This bone weighs 13.36g, has a length of 91.8mm, and sub-circular maximum diameter of 20.0mm tapering to a point. The bone has been worked to a point and has a smoothed and polished surface. This artefact might have been used in the textile production industry. Date is unknown. A second bone, found within the same field as the worked bone described above, has a weight of 12.55g, length of 108.0mm, maximum width of 24.5mm and maximum thickness of 16.3mm. The distal end of this bone is complete. A break is present along the leng…

An incomplete Post-Medieval silver bosun's whistle. These have been dated spanning between c. AD 1500-1700, though they are more commonly considered to date to the 17th century AD. This type of whistle is a composite artefact. The remains of this object weigh 2.82g. Two hemispheres form an egg-shaped oval that give the whistle its maximum width of 16.3mm (the egg-shape's length axis). Originally the egg-shape would have had a diameter of c.11.1mm however, one side has been significantly depressed, possibly with an area c.5.3mm x 5.2mm lost completely. Dried mud adhering to the…

A lead biconical (described by the Cambridgeshire Young Archaeologists Club as flying saucer shaped) weight. No traces of iron can be seen and there is no evidence surviving to show how this weight might have been suspended. Height 34mm, diameter 36mm, weight 225.2g (7.94oz). Although it is difficult to date weights this one may be Roman in date as it was found on a site producing predominantly Roman artefacts. This artefact was found on a joint, gridded field walking and metal detecting survey project, with members of the Cambridge branch of the Young Archaeologist's Club, parents…

An egg shaped lead weight with the remains of an iron loop just visible within the depression at the top of the weight. Weight is approximately 175g (6oz), height 39.44mm, maximum diameter 33.45mm. The date of this weight is uncertain and could range from Roman to Post-Medieval (AD43-1700) however it is likely to be Roman due to associated finds.

A lead weight of uncertain date. The weight would originally have been conical in shape with a base diameter of just less than 21.00mm. The weight now has two parallel sides forming a sub-rectangular shaped base suggesting that it has become squashed under it's own weight, a problem that lead objects are prone to as a result of the material properties, being soft but heavy, characteristic of lead. The artefact is 21.70mm high and has the remains of an iron suspension loop at the tip of the weight. This object weighs 27.59g (0.97oz). It is not possible to date these weights precisely w…

A lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in shape. One side has a relatively smooth surface with a slightly riased rim and a shallow depression in the centre. The other side is rigid and a number of grooves and shallow holes whichmay have formed some sort of decoration but is now illegible. The weight has a diameter of 19.81mm, thickness of 7.19mm and weighs 17.7g. Thick circular lead weight, a maximum of 24.94mm in diameter and 14.06mm thick. One face is slightly flatter than the other; the other face is slightly rounded. In the centre is a circular perforation c.11.07mm in diameter. It weighs 42.66g (1.50oz). Assigning a date and function to simple weights such as this one is not easy, but lead weights do seem to have been most common in the medieval and post-medieval periods. For similar examples see CAM-5CCA61 and CAM-5D0962.

Probably a lead weight in the form of a truncated cone, probably medieval or post-medieval, or a spindle whorl of similar date. The flat base is sub-circular with a diameter of 26.67mm. The weight is currently 16.44mm tall. There is a roughly central perforation 9.24mm in diameter at the base that narrows to 5.95mm at the apex of the cone. A slight groove is present around the perforation, approximately equally spaced between the perforation and the outer edge of the weight, on the flat base. The artefact weighs 45.45g (1.60oz). A copper-alloy standard trade weight for averdepois and troy systems of Post-Medieval to Modern date, AD1590-1826. The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. A cylindrical lead weight of uncertain date. The crudely formed weight has a length of 39.10mm and maximum diameter of 16.27mm tapering slightly to 14.85mm at the opposite end. The damage to the exterior surface and crude appearance of the weight might be a result of damage through use as well as occuring during later loss of the artefact and its subsequent years in the soil. A central perforation is present and seems to extend through the entire length of weight. A biconical lead weight. Weights of this form are generally thought to be Roman but the date is uncertain. The weight has a length of 43.73mm and maximum diameter of 39.54mm. The transverse cross-section is oval however it is uncertain whether the cross section of this weight was originally circular but has become reshaped into an oval under it's own weight. The remains of an iron bar, rectangular in cross section projects from what is presumed to be the top of the weight. This bar is most likely to be the remains of a suspension loop. The iron bar has a width of 4.96mm, thickness of …
