An incomplete late Roman buckle, approximately half survives. Weight 4.04g, length 30.6mm, incomplete width 14.8mm, maximum thickness of frame 3.7mm, thickness over the hinge loop (diameter of hinge loop) 6.5mm. This buckle had an oval or D-shaped frame, forming a penannular loop, of oval cross-section. The break is worn and covered with the same mid-green patina that is present over the rest of the artefact. This is with the exception of small area of light green patina that represents slight shallow damage to the surface, possibly during recent discovery. At the …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular buckle of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1660-1720. Only one corner survives, with part of the leading edge and part of one side arm of the frame. No evidence for a surface coating is present. The two side arms would have expanded, from a flattened 'D' shaped cross-section at the frame's corners, in width (maximum 4.6mm) and thickness (maximum 3.6mm) to accommodate a drilled frame for a, now missing, separate spindle. The frame has an oval cross-section over the drilled aperture. The drilled frame has a circular aperture of c.…

A copper-alloy single loop sub-rectangular buckle frame, pin missing, with forward projecting off-set bar. The dating of these are uncertain. Single loop rectangular buckles can date from c.AD1300 to at least AD1500, see Whitehead R. 2003, pp.26-27, nos.126-133. The recorder suspects that these buckles with forward projecting off-set bars are likely to be for use with horse harness, the dating possibly extending to at least the first half of 20th century AD?  This would give a wide date range of Medieval to the early Modern period. The thinking being that items use…

The incomplete remains of a Medieval copper-alloy buckle. Only small portions of the frame, pin and buckle plate survive. The buckle plate is made from copper-alloy sheet metal of 0.6mm thickness. All edges of the plate are worn and some loss of extent due to breakage is probable. The plate has a maximum width of 11.7mm. It passes around the pin bar of the incomplete buckle frame recurving to form a double layer of plate with gap of c.0.5mm between the two layers. The length of both sides of the plate are incomplete with irregular worn breaks. Both having broken before the presence of…

A Post-Medieval buckle frame, pin missing, dating to c.AD 1620-1680. This is a form of buckle described by Whitehead, R. as a double loop trapezoidal buckle with moulded decoration on the loops. See Whitehead, R. 2003, p.84. This buckle frame weighs 6.28g, has a length of 26.9mm, maximum width of 38.7mm and thickness of 2.5mm. The frame's cross-section is trapezoidal being slightly greater in measurement on the reverse surface than the front. The central integral pin-bar measures 2.4mm on the length axis. The narrower end of the frame has four lobes on the external edge. Thes…

A Medieval to early Post-Medieval copper-alloy annular buckle with pin surviving attached to the frame. The buckle frame and pin have a combined weight of 1.51g. The frame has an oval cross-section, flattened on the upper and lower surfaces. The width of the frame varies from 1.9mm to 2.9mm. This gives the frame a maximum external diameter of 16.1mm with internal measurement of 10.8mm. At 90 degrees to those measurements the frame's diameter measures 14.7mm externally and 10.4mm internally. The frame has a thickness ranging between 1.7mm to 2.1mm. The frame is completely…

A small Medieval copper-alloy buckle. This buckle has a rectangular to trapezoidal shaped frame. The leading edge has a width of 13.2mm. The width increases to 14.0 across a very short knop that protrudes from the outer edges of the frame, 5.8mm back from the leading edge. The frame has a width of 13.0mm across the middle of the frame's aperture and then narrows to 10.9mm across the bar. The leading edge is expanded, and moulded on the upper surface, accounting for 5.7mm of the buckle frame's 15.8mm total length. The inner edge of the leading part of the frame is at c.90 deg…

A Post-Medieval buckle frame dating to c. AD 1575-1700. This artefact weighs 1.37g, has a maximum length of 23.6mm, maximum width of 15.2mm and maximum thickness of 1.8mm. The frame is a double loop asymmetrical buckle with moulded decoration. The frame has a width across the central bar of 12.9mm. The upper surface of the frame has a subtle narrow decorative ridge. An incomplete and very worn buckle plate probably of Medieval date. The sheet metal is rectangular in shape with an incomplete length of 41.5mm and width of 16.8mm. The sheet has a thickness of 5.48mm. Set diagonally in from one corner by 2.6mm there is a circular aperture of 2.6mm diameter. The adjacent corner along the width dimension has broken off. This break has occurred across a similar aperture only approximately half of which survives. These apertures would originally have been used as rivet holes to secure the buckle plate onto the strap. A Post-Medieval copper-alloy buckle chape dating to c. AD 1660-1800. This would have been a stud chape from a two-piece buckle, however, the stud is now missing from the distal end of the chape. The chape weighs 3.03g and has a total length of 33.1mm. The proximal end is the widest part of the chape measuring 17.1mm over the bifid cylindrical hinge. The hinge cylinder has an external diameter of 3.2mm and internal diameter of 1.8mm. The bifid notch accounts for 5.0mm of the maximum width dimension and its depth accounts for 3.6mm of the chape's total length. A separate, now missing, s…

A Medieval to early Post-Medieval buckle frame dating to c. AD 1350-1650. This copper-alloy buckle frame is a complete plain spectacle buckle, the pin now missing. It weighs 2.03g, has a width of 20.4mm and thickness of 1.8mm. The frame has a length of 20.7mm, however one half of the frame bends forwards at an angle of c.54 degrees. Use of a flexible dress-maker's tape-measure indicates that it has a bent length of c.23.0mm.
