A fragment from a very incomplete copper-alloy artefact, probably a Roman brooch, probably a trumpet headed bow brooch of 2nd century AD, (or possibly a plate brooch of mid to late 1st to 2nd century AD). It is likely that all edges represent a broken edge although some small areas might be extreme wear to a true edge. The upper and reverse surfaces both damaged through post depositional decay and or damage. This fragment weighs 5.55g, has an incomplete length of 29.8mm, incomplete maximum width of 17.5mm and maximum thickness of 7.3mm. The fragment has an irregular sh…

A bent but complete Roman bow brooch, of Colchester derivative hinged form, dating to c. AD43-120. This brooch weighs 5.56g and has a maximum width, across the wings, of 26.2mm. In its bent condition it has a height (length) of 30.9mm and occupies an arcing depth from front to back of 23.8mm. The wings are cylindrical but asymmetrical, with no obvious join line along the cylinder. When viewing the brooch from the front with the head upper most, the wing to the right is well defined, has a slightly convexly capped terminal and transverse groove of 1.1mm crossing the who…

A copper-alloy annular brooch frame of Medieval date. Weight is 3.25g, external diameter on the pin constriction axis is 21.8mm, external diameter on the axis at 90 degrees to that is 23.6mm. The frame has a sub-circular shape, the pin constriction accounting for 2.3mm of the total circmference. The frame's cross-section is circular with a diameter of c.3.0mm, the pin constriction also has a circular cross-section the diameter reducing to 1.3mm. The pin is not present. There is no decoration on the frame nor any evidence of a surface coating.

An incomplete copper-alloy Early-Medieval cruciform bow brooch, only the terminal of the foot survives and even this is incomplete having a break at either end. None of the foot's flat panel survives. A worn transverse break is present at what would originally have been the junction between the, now missing, flat panel and a raised moulding of transverse ribs that does survive. This moulding has a semi-circular cross-section, width of 14.9mm x thickness 6.1mm and measures 6.1mm on the artefact's length axis. Just past this proximal break, the reverse surface becomes concave. P…

A copper-alloy Roman brooch of Headstud or Headstud variant type. Complete, with exception of the missing pin, this type dates from the mid. 1st to 2nd century AD. This brooch weighs 11.78g, has a maximum width of 16.2mm and maximum depth, of bow arc, (from external front surface to rear of brooch) of 22.3mm. From base of foot to highest point (top of head-loop) the brooch has a length of 42.00mm.  The head: Viewing the brooch from the front, the wings have a sub-rectangular shape, with rounded corners - possibly due to wear rather than design. A silver Medieval annular brooch with zoomorphic decoration. The brooch frame weighs 1.56g and the pin is absent. The brooch frame has a 'D' shaped cross-section, the reverse surface being flat, and circular shape which has been decorated to resemble two snake like beasts entwined. The beasts appear to probably be amphisbaena although possibly one end of each snake is actually an enlarged and swollen tail rather than second head. If the later possibility is correct then this could be an attempt to represent the rattle on a rattle snake. On the pin constriction axis the brooch …

A Medieval silver annular brooch with pin intact dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The brooch weighs 0.59g, on the axis across the brooch in line with the pin constriction and pin, the sub-circular frame has an external diameter of 16.8mm and internal diameter of 14.4mm. The external diameter of the brooch, across the axis at 90 degrees from that given above, is 16.1mm and 13.2mm internally. The thickness of the frame is 1.3mm. A Medieval silver annular brooch with decorative twisted (cable pattern) frame. The pin is intact, and both the frame and pin have punch-stamped decoration. The brooch weighs 2.85g, the annular loop of the frame has an oval shape externally measuring 30.6mm over the pin axis and 25.4mm on the axis at 90 degrees from the pin. It is likely that the loop of the frame is somewhat squashed from its original shape, the frame to one side of the pin having an undulating rather than smooth continuous arc between the pin constriction and opposing side of the frame where the pin tip comes t…

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy fantail brooch, dating to c.AD 85-150. The head of the brooch has wings that give the artefact a maximum width of 15.7mm. These wings measure 5.7mm on the length axis and curve backwards forming a depth of 3.6mm. The curved wings would originally have contained a hinged pin, now missing. Some fantail brooches have a headloop. The example described here does not include an integral headloop. However, the upper edge of the head and wings feels quite rough and bumpy if one runs a fingertip along the edge. Given the corroded condition of this object it is …

An incomplete copper-alloy British plate disc brooch with remains of enamel. Originally circular in shape much of the edge of the artefact is now missing due to damage. The remains weigh 5.62g. The brooch currently has a diameter of 27.5mm but the catchplate on the reverse surface protrudes past the edge of the disc plate at which point the diameter, on that axis only, measures 29.9mm. The disc has a thickness of 3.2mm at the centre and thins towards the edge where it measures c.1.5mm. It has a sub-rectangular cross-section and diameter of 33.8mm. The edge of the disc is expanded at four cardinal points (one of which is now missing) by rectangular knobs that project out on the same plane as the disc (Hattatt, R. refers to these as peripheral lugs but they could also be described as tabs). A copper-alloy annular brooch, complete except for a missing pin, of Medieval date, and possibly ranging into the start of the early Post-Medieval period.
