Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly damaged cast copper-alloy flanged axehead of Early Bronze Age date. This is a Needham's Class 5, probably Type C, dating to the Arreton phase of the early Bronze Age c.1700 to 1400 cal BC. The blade and haft appear to be slightly truncated by damage.
The butt of the axe is slightly ragged with flanges that are stepped above the septum at the break. The sides of the axehead widen gradually in broadly straight lines down the majority of its length before suddenly curving out at the blade end to create a widely expanded blade with what would originally …

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A complete copper alloy flanged axehead of Later Early Bronze Age (1800-1500 BC). This axehead has a convexly rounded arched butt and slightly diverging parallel sides that abruptly expand to a broad crescentic blade and cutting edge. The blade tips are worn and stop at an angle of just over 45 degrees. Subtle shallow cast flanges extend along the sides, rising very gradually from the butt towards the middle of the axe and sloping down again to the blade expansion. This gives the axe a very shallow lenticular side profile. A slight cast proto-stop ridge / median bevel is present at th…

A copper-alloy biconical bead of sub-circular to oval shape dating to the Bronze Age, probably middle Bronze Age to early Iron Age. This bead weighs 6.78g. It measures 15.9mm x 14.7mm transversely across the perforation and has a 'height', on the same axis as the perforation, of 9.9mm. The external surfaces of the bead are smooth, polished and undecorated. One side has a small irregular shaped depression at the mid point in the height. This area measures 4.7mm x height 3.1mm and is probably most likely to be the result of a casting imperfection rather than post-production damage.

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. This arrowhead was a tertiary flint object but has since completely recorticated. The only area where recortication is not present is at the tips of the barbs which have broken off. The artefact is bifacially worked, the retouch covering one side and being invasive - almost covering - on the other side. On the invasive side just a narrow (2.0mm) length (18.1mm) does not show retouch, the initial longitudinal working of the flint visible through the surrounding retouch. The retouch on both sides is scaled and low-angle.

A tertiary flint scraper. This flint has a subtriangular cross-section with a longitudinal mid ridge along one surface. The opposite side has evidence of a shallow bulb or percussion and very shallow S-shaped profile indicative of soft hammer working. All surfaces are heavily recorticated except for the areas of retouch suggesting that these are evidence of more recent reworking. It is possible that this piece of flint initially broke and was debitage during blade production and then later reused. The retouch is present on the two longitudinal opposite edges. This retouch is short, sc…

A primary flint, very late and very crudely made, scraper. A large inclusion occupies approximately half of the inner surface of the flint, which seems to have two hinge fractures along two edges. The most obvious of these has an abrupt near vertical angle although this may account for later damage. The other possible hinge fracture, if it is such, is much more subtle running along the edge of the flint. However this may just be how the flint has fractured at a shallow, very low angle between the flint and cortex. The opposite edge has short scaled abrupt retouch. Possibly a reutilise…

An incomplete fragment of a copper-alloy (bronze) flanged axe or possibly a palstave of late Early Bronze Age or Middle Bronze Age date (2000-1500 BC). The fragment is rectangular in plan and broadly H shaped in cross section. All that remains of the axe is the tip of the butt which is rounded in shape - a small area of the septum survives and the raised side flanges expand along both edges. These flanges are slight and seem to be either cast or hammer raised - they do not appear to be like those of Palstaves but the fragment is too small to be diagnostic. The break has occurred acros…

Description:
The 'East Cambridgeshire' torc is a four-flange twisted bar torc of Middle Bronze Age date, known to belong to the Penard phase of c.1300-1150 BC (Taylor 1980, 62; Needham 2001; Roberts 2007). It is made of three separate components: two very similar, undecorated, bent-back, 'trumpet'-shaped, terminals affixed at either end of an exceptionally long (126.5cms, excluding the terminals) spiral twisted bar with very regular cruciform (i.e. '+' shaped) cross-section. The advantages of casting such an elaborate torc in three pieces is discussed by Taylor (1980, 61-2). A neat …

An incomplete piece of late Bronze Age (1100-750 BC) socketed axe head, probably Ewart Park phase, comprising of the blade end. This incomplete object weighs 114.04g and has an incomplete length of 37.8mm.
The crescent shaped blade tip flares out to a width of 55.9mm and shows slight damage and considerable corrosion. The sides seem to be relatively parallel. A casting seam can be seen running along the centre line, along both edges, from the corner tips of the curved cutting edge down to the break. "The axe is finished and the seams are trimmed and hammered flat" (Peter Reavill).
