Late Medieval to Post Medieval ceramic vessel base sherd. It has an oxidised brown/red well-sorted fabric that cannot be scratched with a thumbnail. The fabric has what appears to be a vitrified purple surface though this may be a well fired slip. Both interior and exterior faces are partly covered with a brown/black glaze. There are similarities with Midlands Purple ware though the fabric is the wrong colour and it may well be a locally produced version of it. Suggested dates c1450 to c1750 AD. Length 55.5mm, width 32mm, thickness 16mm (wall 6mm), weight 21.95g.
