Object type: COIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Hammered silver 'Bull & Horse' coin of the Gandhāra kingdom in northern India, probably Early Medieval. It depicts a mounted Hun warrior advancing right on one side and a seated Brahmin bull or cow facing left on the other. No legible insciption. Variations on the initial design were used by both Muslim and Hindu rulers of the kingdom of Gandhāra (modern northern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan). Dates to between c750 and c1300 AD. The coins silver content dropped to nearly zero in later issues so it is assumed this one dates to c1050 or earlier, but more research would be required…

Black flint core with remains of cortex. Blades have been struck off in a somewhat haphazard way, suggesting that it was used for a short period and possibly by an inexperienced Mesolithic or Neolithic knapper. However this pattern of flaking, the size of the flakes, and the presence of so much cortex, make it more likely to be Bronze Age. It measures 50mm in length 39mm in width, 31mm in thickness and weighs 51.9 grms. The core dates from c7000 - c800 BC.

White flint with grey inclusions, probably an unfinished Neolithic scraper. It appears to have been poorly retouched. There is a ridge running longitudinally down two thirds of the dorsal face from the proximal end. The distal end is made up of partly of cortex material and attempts have been made to narrow the distal's depth with at least two flakes being removed diagonally on the dorsal side. Measures 55mm in length, 38mm in width and 10mm in thickness. Dates between c3500 and c1500bc.

Heavily worked dark grey flint with light grey inclusions, probably Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic. The tool measures 64mm in length, 31mm in width and 12mm in thickness. Nearly complete but with modern damage along one ventral edge. For ease of description the thinner end will be nominated the distal. The last half of the curved cutting edge toward the distal has been retouched from the dorsal side. Ther are a few micro flakes inside a long shallow curved flake (all made from the ventral side) at the proximal end. The distal point has broken in antiquity and appears to have been …

White flint with large light grey inclusions, possible Neolithic blade or arrowhead. The curved cutting edge has been retouched from both sides. The other edge is made up in large part by cortex, and this part of the edge is naturally serrated. Its use seems deliberate. Measures 36mm in length, 14mm in width and 7mm in thickness. Dates between c3500bc and c1500bc.

White flint with grey core exposed by break in antiquity which is possibly a broad blade from the Neolithic dating from 6500BC to 1500BC. There are some grey inclusions and a slightly concave edge of 35mm possibly retouched lightly from the ventral side. The convex edge is largely made of what appears to be the cortex. There are two ridges running lengthways down the dorsal face. The break has occured across the width of the distal end. There is a with a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral side with a failed attempt to remove this. The proximal end forms a blunt point. There ar…

Neolithic white flint scraper and borer dating between 3500BC and 1500BC. The distal working edge is curved with multiple retouchs and probably used as a scraper. The proximal end has been formed into a point suitable for use as a drill or borer. The flint has tiny inclusions of iron rich material, and larger ones similar to cortex, plus numerous pale grey areas. The ventral face has a large bulb of percusssion at the proximal point, the pattern on of conchoidal ripples is confusing possibly due to the hardness of some of the inclusions. The proximal end has had the striking platform …
