Object type: SPATULA
Broad period: ROMAN

A Roman copper-alloy spatula handle in the form of a bust of Minerva who wears a large crested helmet. The hair is roped as a fringe below the helmet and the facial features are worn. The neckline is rounded with ridges following the concave shoulders and there are transverse ridges below the bust on both sides. The handle has a rebated splaying hollow for the missing iron blade, which was presumably attached by solder.
The handle is of Feugère (1995) Type A5. This is only the fourth example of its type to be recorded in the South West. See NMGW-DED9D2 for a parallel.
