Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small, flat, circular seal with worn edges. There are two stubs of a loop on the reverse, roughly at the top of the inscription, The central motif is a squirrel in profile facing right (left on the impression). The squirrel has a bushy tail curving up and over its back, and the inscription starts by the centre of the tail. It is set between beaded borders, and reads *SOVhOV SOVhO (a hunting cry). The second word normally ends in a V, but this is not clearly visible here; there seems to be a decorative space-filling element instead. 14th century.
