A military button of c1800. The button shows a crown above the letters BV (probably for Banbury Volunteers). Steve Newman comments: The clear front runners for this are either the Banbury or Bicester Volunteer Infantry units. As it was found in Newbottle, which puts it closer to Banbury, that is the strongest candidate. Other finds being recorded may allow a conclusive ID to be made.

A silvered copper alloy button of the North Hampshire militia, c1800, with a rose in the centre. Above the rose is NORTH and below is HANTS. This button is a newly recorded type for the North Hants Militia and is probably their first pattern, as the South Hants first pattern, which has been known about for a long time, is identical in layout (but says South rather North). The presumption has been that there should be an earlier version for the North and it was likely to be of that design. This example confirms this theory.
