Two pieces of later 19th century to 20th century clay pipe stem from the same location.  The first (top one in image) is a fragment from a claw design where the bowl is in the form of an egg being grasped by an eagle's claw. This fragment is part of the stem where the scale like design represents part of the eagle's leg. The eagle's claw design is typical of pipes produced c1870-1920+, (and especially c1890-1920+). The second (lower one in image), was made by Charles Crop of London, one of the premier manufacturers of the period. The business was founded in 1855…

A clay tobacco pipe bowl with a heart-shaped stamp on the flat heel which shows a letter A. Dr. David Higgins comments: This bowl looks like a typical form for London and the southeast of around 1660-80. The heart-shaped mark is typical of those used in the Thames Valley area at this period but is unusual in that it only appears to contain the single letter A, rather than a pair of initials. A worn sherd from a samian bowl, form Dragendorff 37, in the style of Cobnertus iv of Rheinzabern. The figure is Venus (Ricken & Fischer 1963, type M45); only a fragment survives of the ovolo border at the top of the decoration, but the persence of the fine squre beads (type 0264) beneath it suggests that it is type E11. The bow and stem junction from a Post Medieval to Modern clay pipe with the initials HT. The stem measures 5.64mm in diameter. Dr. David Higgins reports: This is a heel fragment from a clay tobacco pipe bowl of a form that was current from around 1780-1830. The earlier examples of this style usually had the mould seam at the base of the heel trimmed off with a knife, but this example is not trimmed, suggesting that it is likely to date from around 1800 or later.
