Object type: NAIL CLEANER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A Roman copper alloy incomplete flat-bladed nail-cleaner with varying decoration (Group) (250- 410AD). The shaft is lozenge-shaped in plan with the bottom point extending to form a bifurcated terminal which has broken off. The lozenge-shaped mid-section is decorated with three incised crosses seperated by tranverse lines; in opposing quarters of the central crosses are stamped ring-and-dots (two in the quarter towards the bifurcated terminal, one in the other). The bifurcated end of the artefact has a straight groove along its centre (which would then be the line of the break to form…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and slightly corroded cast copper-alloy post medieval 'locking buckle'. The frame is rectangular in plan, with rounded corners. The outer edge is wide (c. 6mm), flat and rabbeted (or notched) to accept and secure a U-shaped arm attached to the pin bar: the arm has entirely broken off. The outer edge of the buckle also features a subtly incised central logitudinal pin rest. In profile the sides are expanded (th.: 6mm) to receive the off-centred pin bar; from this point they travel down to the outer edge in a curvilinear fashion. As implied, the pin bar survives in situ with th…

A medieval copper alloy chape. It is triangular with a circular knop at the point (measuring 2.03mm x 2.3mm). At the opposite end the chape has broken, but preserves the rectangular hollow inside (12.95mm x 5.83mm). One face of the chape been decorated with two rows of triangles along either edge. It is covered in a dark green patina. Its size suggests it is probably from a dagger or knife rather than a sword, and dates to c. 14th or 15 century. The length of the chape is now 20.86mm, and it weighs 2.34g.

An Iron Age (800 BC - 100 AD) cast copper alloy triskele mount or Fob. The object consists of a central short circular shaft, 6.61 mm long, which terminates in a loop, now missing. The top of the shaft teminates with a triangular form from which emerges, at 120 degree angles, three curving shafts. The ends of these shafts join into sub-circular knops. These knops project outwards midway along the sides of a rounded triangular frame. When viewed from above this forms a pattern of three 'teardrop' shaped holes. The front face of the mount has shallow recesses, which form lines on the si…

The plate has folded in half so the upper surface forms the outside. The surfaces are a very abraded red-brown, the colour suggesting it was possibly once gilded. A medieval date is suggested, but the object may be earlier; similar buckle plate have been recorded on this database, notably from Norfolk: NMS-7B12A7, NMS-F996C1, NMS-40BC86.
