Unidentified iron object. The small object is very similar to an early Roman brooch in form, with a 'T' shaped head, and curved body. However, the foot is formed where the end of the object is rolled inwards, almost in a spiral. There is no sign of a catchplate or similar. This, and the fact that the object is made from iron, suggest that it is unlikely to be a brooch of this date, despite the other similarities. However, due to heavy errosion it is difficult to see any features of the object apart from its basic form, making it difficult to identify it further. Length: 33.1mm, Wid…

Part of an unidentified iron (coated with copper alloy) object. It consists of a long bar, circular in profile, which goes upwards slightly at the very tip before culminating in a teardrop section, which extends downwards at a slight angle. Through this section is a very regular circular hole. The upper half of the other end appears to have attached to something else. Close to this break an integral, roughly semi-circular, loop extends downwards. The metal is brownish-red in colour with a few small patches of greenish copper alloy in places on the surface. A similar object can also …

A small fragment of copper-alloy, possibly from an axe or similar implement. The fragment is wedge shaped, with a sharp, rounded edge on one side and straight, rough, blunt edges on all other sides, suggesting that it has indeed broken away from a larger object, which may well have been an axe. However, beyond such suggestions, its small size makes it impossible to draw any definite conclusions about what this object may have been and to what period it dates from. Treasure case 2010 T277: Not Treasure, returned to finder A small incomplete gold ingot of uncertain date. The object is sub-rectangular in shape, though crudely formed. It is rounded at one end, with a rough break at the other. It survives in fairly good condition apart from a few scratch marks on each face. B ecause of its undiagnostic nature, the find cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. An incomplete copper alloy unidentfied object of uncertain date (possibly Roman or medieval). It consists of a flat semi-circular disk, with a break along the straight edge suggesting that it was circular originally. The outer face has slightly bevelled edges and is decorated with two closely spaced grooves radiating out from the centre. The outer edge of the plate bulges out slightly between the ends of these grooves. The function of the object and its date is uncertain, although it may have been a decorative mount of some kind. There are slight traces of a white metal coating on bot…

An incomplete unidentified object of unknown date. It consists of a thin metal plate, trapezoidal at one end, but expanding rapidly and curving outwards at the wider end. The narrow end shows evidence of a break. The object looks vaguely like a tool of some kind, but its simple, flat form and blunt outer edge means that it would not have been functional and instead it may have been part of a larger, decorative object. It is green in colour with a shiner patina on one face. Length: 28.92mm, width: 20.76mm, thickness: 2.80mm, weight: 7.45g

A fragment of copper alloy Bronze Age to post-medieval metalworking debris. It is small, long and narrow, but heavily mis-shapen. Two complete coiled lead net sinkers or weights of uncertain date. Both consist of long rectangular sheets of lead rolled into a tube, one smaller than the other. A considerable number of these objects have been found during excavations of sites of multiple periods and also are recorded on the PAS database (e.g. LEIC-F9408C, LIN-356838,NLM-22BA33). Dates ranging from the Iron Age to 15th century have been cited, although early medieval dates are often preferred. They may be distinguished from Roman curse tablets as are less neat and tightly coiled. The Flixborough excavation report…
