A complete Neolithic finely worked polished stone axehead. It is an elongated sub-triangular shape and oval in cross-section, with straight slightly outwards curving sides, a narrow, rounded butt and a blade end that curves outwards only very slightly. It is composed of a coarse-grained basic intrusive rock that has probably undergone metamorphism, speckled white and blue-grey in colour. There is a patch of orange-brown straining on one face. It survives in good condition with only a small amount of damage to the butt end. Dr Emily Banfield (pers. com.) kindly comments …

A perforated stone implement of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is sub-ovoid in shape with one rounded end and one narrower, angular end. There is a cylindrical perforation situated behind the narrower end, c.31mm in diameter. There are linear marks on both faces and around the wider end indicative of impact during use. It is made from a fine grained, light yellow, sedimentary stone. The precise function of these objects is debated, although they are frequently described as 'mace heads'. Dating is also uncertain. Although traditionally thought to …

A fragment of one section of a cylindrical rotary quernstone/millstone of Roman or later date. It is a small section, trapezoidal in shape, of a much larger flat, disc-shaped quernstone, although it is not clear whether it is the upper or lower stone. The outer grinding surface has been dressed with pecking, while the other face is roughly dressed. The fragment is roughly rectangular in cross-section, but the original shape, circumference and the form of the central hole are all unclear due to its fragmentary condition. It is a mid-grey, fine-grained, volcanic stone with vesicular sur…

Two fragments of rotary quernstones of probable Roman date. The larger fragment was found initially and the smaller one discovered close by on a subsequent visit. Both finds comprise small sections of larger disc-shaped quernstones, each featuring part of the original curved outer edges. The stone from which they are formed appears to be volcanic. The larger fragment has parallel, diagonal grooves across one face, while both faces of the smaller fragment are smooth, suggesting that they are not part of the same object. The form of the quern and the volcanic nature of the stone in…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A probable fragment of an Iron Age or early Roman puddingstone quern. Only a small chunk, bearing breaks on all faces, survives. Puddingstone is distinctive conglomerate containing rounded red flint pebbles within a siliceous matrix, the main sources of which lie in Hertfordshire. Research carried out by Major in Essex suggests that puddingstone rotary querns were produced here from at least 10 AD until around 160 AD and a similar chronology seems likely in Cambridgeshire (2004, 2-4). An incomplete Neolithic flaked an polished flint axe. It is roughly triangular in shape, with largely straight sides and a slightly outwards curving blade end. Both faces are covered with scaled, covering retouch and have been partially polished on the ridges between the flaking scars. The blade end has also been polished to create a sharp cutting edge. There is an abrupt break across the butt end and its tip is missing. The flint is an opaque light grey in colour with some surface patination. An incomplete Neolithic polished flint handaxe. It is long and roughly oval in shape, but expanding slightly towards the blade end, and plano-convex in cross section with a slightly higher central ridge on one face. There is a small amount of invasive, scaled, low angle retouch along the sides and a chunk is missing from one side of the blade end. This break is heavily patinated suggesting that it occurred prior to deposition and possibly as a result of use. It expands slightly towards the blade end, which curves outwards and there is an abrupt break across the narrow butt end. Around 60% of each face features the original polished surface, but there is scaled, invasive, low-angle retouch along each side and a few smaller removals across the blade end, suggesting that the axe was modified at some point to allow further use - perhaps after it was damaged. An incomplete probable whetstone or hone, which could be of Roman to Modern date. The stone is a fine grained grey silt- or mudstone and has clearly been intentionally shaped. All four sides are long and sub-triangular, each triangle alternately tapering in a different direction, meaning that each end expands at an angle to the other. There is a break at each end. A slight depression in the centre of one of these breaks suggests that the stone may have been perforated originally. Several similar whetstones can be seen in the Meols report (Griffiths et al. 2007, 246, pl.57, no.3315-333…

An unfinished spindle whorl, made from a what appears to be a piece of stone. The object is disk shaped and both surfaces are flattened. One one face there is a fairly deep off-centre depression. One the other face there is a further depression, roughly the same position, but slightly shallower. It is likely that these were originally intended to meet, together forming a hole through the object. The material is brownish in colour, hard and with a fine slightly sandy texture - perhaps mudstone.  A few smooth, shiny, reddish coloured veins run across both faces - maybe the result of …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large beehive quernstone, made from medium grained quartz sandstone, typical of those found in the North Yorkshire area. The stone would have originally been sub-hemispherical in shape. However, two sides have become damaged leaving portions of the stone missing. One on of the damaged sides, towards the base, a small indentation may be seen, which is probable the remains of a handle-hole. Through the centre of the stone is a hole; the feedpipe. Where this enters the top of the stone it has become very well worn, producing a funnel shape. Circular scratch marks produced during use ca…
