A copper alloy wire ring possibly dating to the Roman period. The object consists of two strips of wire which are bent into a circle to form the band. The ends overlap and curl around the band forming two slip knots. The strips of wire are circular in cross-section. Dimensions: 19mm in diameter, 11mm in width at the bezel, 1.50g. This basic style of slip-knotted wire ring had a long life (there are Roman examples) but was perhaps most popular in the 7th century AD, when it was most commonly used on necklaces. Similar finger rings are known from Viking graves and hoards of the la…

An inlaid gold bezel from an early medieval finger-ring. The bezel is quatrefoil in form, with four rounded lobes radiating from a central field to create a cruciform motif. One pair of lobes is shorter than the other, and the areas linking them are slightly convex. The bezel is constructed from a gold base-plate with applied bands ('carpeting': pers. comm. Niamh Whitfield) of gold beaded wire and granulation (gold pellets) arranged concentrically. There are eleven bands of decoration: from outermost to innermost, they comprise: Single strand of beaded wire Two strands of be…

A Post-Medieval gold posy ring. The outside of the hoop is decorated with a foliate design. The inside of the hoop bears the inscription 'If love can merit' 'I Shall in herit'. Roman silver finger-ring of Henig Type XI, the hoop slightly crushed and edges dented. The slender hoop expands to form triangular cambered shoulders, bordered by a line of dot-punching which is also used on the flat bezel to define a square panel. Within the panel are three incised letters - ToT, the central o tiny in comparison to the flanking T's which have flamboyant serifs at their foot in the form of an inverted V. That device is very commonly employed on TOT rings (Daubney 2010, Figs 9-10). The inscription is an abbreviation of the god name Totatis. As Daubney has shown (Daubne…

Treasure Number: 2014 T217 A Post-Medieval gold signet finger-ring fragment. Most of the hoop is now missing although the bezel remains intact. The finger-ring shows a coat of arms which Dr Clive Cheeseman (Richmond Herald, College of Arms) has described as "being made up of a shield and a crest, with helmet and full mantling engraved in what appears to be a 17th century style. The shield has an engrailed saltire on it with a rose or cinquefoil in the upper part of the shield. It can often, as here, be difficult to tell the difference between a rose and a cinquefoil. If it is a ros…

A silver finger ring in the form of a strap or miniature belt. It has fractured across the band at one point, no gilding is evident. The hoop, which has a fracture across it, has a band width of 6.3mm, an internal diameter of 22.2 x 19mm and weight of 5.844g. The finger ring has a form typical of a nineteenth century date. The popular form was made by a range of manufacturers, including Spiers (Hart 1978, 133). Details of the strap slide vary, and some have buckle loops. This ring is of nineteenth-century date and therefore as it is not at least 300 years old is not treasure under …

An inscribed ring, silver gilt (?). Plain on one side, the other inscribed in relief ONCE MYNE AND EVER THYN with three crosses. The plain surface is very slightly curved, suggesting that the surface with the inscription is inside. The ring has been straightened and appears to have been repaired (repair located between TH and YN of the inscription 'THYN'). This ring does not correspond to any of the posy rings in the British Museum collections, which have exteriors that are either plain or decorated with inscriptions on the inside. This is therefore a puzzling example which ma…

Treasure number 2010 T293. A Roman gold finger-ring, complete and in fine condition. The hexagonal hoop has a flat inner surface, a neatly-faceted external surface and prominent keeled shoulders. The lightly-raised oval box setting contains a banded quartz (nicolo) intaglio - flat, oval, with bevelled edge - finely-engraved with the figure of a swimming dolphin with a three-pronged trident protruding from its jaws (or from behind its head). The image of a dolphin had several possible connotations in antiquity. The marine nature of this example is underlined by the addition of a tr…
