A fragment of Roman greyware dating from AD 43-410. The object consists of a rim fragment which is 'comma' shaped in cross-section and curved in profile. Each face of the object is light grey in colour with tiny flecks of black and white inclusions. The internal fabric is a slightly darker grey but has been evenly fired. An incomplete clay pipe of Post Medieval date. The object consists of the bowl of a clay pipe and a fragment of the stem. The mouth of the bowl is decorated with a series of moulded ridges. There is a small round spur at the base of the bowl measuring 5.89mm in diameter. The pipe bowl is incomplete and has a skull and crossbones motif on each side and part of a motto underneath. The motto would originally have read either 'DEATH OR GLORY' or 'DEATH & GLORY' (both versions occur and it's not clear which has been used here). Incomplete ceramic building material probably a tile of Roman date. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The upper and lower faces of the object undulate slightly. The upper face is orange in colour with narrow striations running parallel across the length. Imprinted on this face are two paw prints from a small animal, possibly a cat or small dog. Incomplete spur bowl dating c.1640-1670. The object consists of the bowl of the pipe and some of the stem. The bowl is long and slightly upright. The mouth of the bowl has broken away and there is damage on the bowl. The bowl is 18.70mm in diameter, the stem 10.05mm in diameter and the internal perforation is 2.77mm. The spur is small and round, 4.32mm in diameter.

Incomplete spur bowl dating c1640-1670.. The object consists of the bowl of the pipe and some of the stem. The bowl is quite long and slightly upright. The mouth and waist are quite narrow and the rim has been bottered and milled. The spur is small and round, 4.64mm in diameter. The bowl is 19.31mm in diameter, the stem is 9.93mm in diameter and the stem bore is 2.74mm in diameter.

Fragment of clay pipe stem from the Post-Medieval period dating c. 1700-1750.  IThe stem is circular in cross-section. The fragment measures 7.92mm in diameter. The stem bore is 6/64".  The stem is marked with a roll stamp Chester border, comprising of  three raised pellets which run diagonally and a raised short diagonal line. This pattern is repeated around the stem.

29 fragments of clay pipe stems and three bowl fragments dating to the Post-Medieval period. The smallest fragment of the group is 6.41mm in diameter and the central perforation is 1.90mm. The largest one is 9.64mm in diameter with a central perforation of 3.03mm. The fragments date from c.1650-1920. All of the stem fragments are plain with the exception of one example which is from a thick "Irish" style stem. The bowl/stem junction end of the fragment has been ground smooth and now has facettes similar to a piece of chalk suggesting that it was used to write/draw/doodle.&nbs…
