A lead alloy weight or spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date. The object is circular in plan and conical. In the centre of the object is a circular perforation with an internal diameter of 9mm. There is no visible decoration on either face. Each surface is heavily abraded probably due to movement within the plough soil. The spindle whorl has a white patina. Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. A complete lead-alloy trade weight of medieval to post-medieval date, c.AD 1380 - 1600. The weight is shield shaped with a raised moulded design featuring a large fleur-de-lis on the upper surface. The upper part of the fleur-de-lis has been damaged with a wide groove cutting through it. Above the fleur-de-lis below either side of the modern damage is the remains of a bi-foliate crown. The even patina of the object suggests that this damage occurred during antiquity while there is further more recent damage above the fleur-de-lis. The reverse is flat and with a deep recent groove runn…

A lead alloy possible spindle whorl or weight of medieval to post-medieval date. The object lozenge shaped in plan with a raised bi-conical circular centre. The object has a central circular perforation which measures 9mm in diameter. Each face has worn decoration, possibly lines which radiate out from the central perforation. The object is uneven. Due to its outer lozenge shape the object would not have functioned particularly well as a spindle whorl and therefore a line weight may be more likely. A large lead alloy weight of post-medieval date. The weight is a pointed oval narrowing in width at one end. At each end of the weight is a small circular hole this may have contained iron for use as a loop however no iron or iron staining remains. The object is undecorated and has a rough pitted brownish grey surface. The weight is probably a steelyard weight indicated by the central hole. Steelyard weights are in use during the Roman period, coming back into use in the post-medieval period. The patina and condition of this weight suggests a post-medieval date is more likely. D…

A lead alloy weight or spindle whorl probably of post-medieval date. The object is circular in plan and cylindrical. In the centre of the object is a regular perforation with an internal diameter of 8mm of diameter. There is no visible decoration and it has been flattened on one side due to damage. The object has a dark grey patina. Due to the size and lack of decoration it is more likely this object functioned as a weight rather than a spindle whorl however it cannot be ruled out. Dimensions: 19mm in diameter, 11mm thick, 29.85g.

A lead alloy weight probably of post-medieval date. The object is sub-spherical with a sub-oval perforation running through it. There is no visible decoration and the object has been damaged at each end. This type of weight has been in use for a long period of time and can have multiple functions or uses. Other weights of this shape have been suggested to be net or line weights from fishing. Modern line weights are similar but tend to have a smaller perforation. It is conical in profile and circular in plan, with one end tapering to a point and bearing evidence of some breakage which could suggest that there was once an attachment loop present. The underside is flat with the edges being very slightly raised. A lead alloy object, possibly a loom weight, most likely dating from the medieval to post-medieval period. It is circular in shape with a central perforation which is sub-rectangular at the top of the object and expands forming a circular perforation at the base. The perforation measures 9mm in lenght and 8mm in width at the top while at the base it measures 15.5mm in diameter. The object is rounded at the top and has a flat base. It has a mid-white patina. A lead alloy object, weight or incomplete spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date. The object is circular in plan and conical. The top of the object has split from the base forming a 'pot lid'. The top of the object has a circular perforation measuring 5mm in diameter while the base is solid. It may have been intended to perferate the object all the way through for use as a spindle whorl however it might also have been intended to form a hole to contain an iron loop for a steelyard weight type suspension. When the top 'pot lid' is removed there is a hollow section within the l…
