One half of a lead seal matrix dating to the Medieval period, c.13th century. When complete the object would have been pointed oval (or vesica shaped) and flat. The central design appears to depict an ear of corn or a branch. The incomplete legend which surrounds this reads ...I' F' RICA... The rear of the object is decorated with three lines which radiate out from the centre of the object each of which has three raised pellets at intervals. The object has …

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Published
A lead seal matrix dating to the Medieval period, c.13th century. It is pointed oval and flat, and now worn. The central device is a star, pattern or perhaps a flower, of eight radiating lines. Four (at the cardinal points) are simple lines but the ones in the angles are nail-like, each ending in a crossbar. Surrounding this is a worn groove.
Beyond the groove is the legend, apparently well engraved but now worn and shallow and difficult to read. It certainly begins + S'. (Seal [of...]), indicating that it was a personal seal bearing a name. The rest is not legible from the photo a…

An incomplete lead seal matrix of Medieval date, probably circular and flat when complete. About a quarter of the matrix survives and the breaks do not appear to be recent. The central motif is worn and cannot be identified due to being incomplete. The inscription is within a linear border, and starts with a cross initial mark. The rest of the inscription is missing except for the last three letters, which read EDL and are large and neatly engraved. A small projection at the top of the object may be an incomplete lug for attachment. The seal matrix has a dark grey patina and is in po…
