A cast copper alloy unidentified object of Early Medieval to Medieval date. The object is conical and faceted with an oval base. The object tapers towards the top which is rounded and complete. Four rounded knops decorate each side of the object just below the rounded top. The object is decorated with a series of punched dots forming a border around the bottom edge of the object. Seven punched dots run from this border up two faces of the object to the central knop. The base is undecorated. The object has a dark green patina and is in good condition.
The object seems too large to be a spoon knop and although a blank for a seal matrix is a possibility the shape and decoration are wrong. Another possible function is a gaming piece however it is not right for a Viking gaming piece or weight.

An incomplete copper alloy object, probably dating to the Early Medieval period. The object is rectangular in plan and cross-section. One long edge is incomplete due to ancient breaks and has a slight rectangular projection in the centre. Along the opposite long edge is a pierced sub-oval projection, which projects at a right angle to the body of the object.
The front of the object is decorated with a rectangular recessed panel. The panel is infilled with transverse decoration of ridges and grooves and is gilded. To the rear of the object two circular possible rivet holes are visible, one towards each end of the object. Each hole is infilled with corrosion. The object has a mid-green patina.
Dimensions: 30mm in length, 11mm in width, 1.5mm thick, 5.35g
A similar object has been recorded from Winchester on the PAS database as a harness fitting, see HAMP-90FE07. The record notes: Alex Bliss and Jo Ahmet comment that, apart from the projecting loop, the object is very similar to Fern, C. 2005; The archaeological evidence for equestrianism in early Anglo-Saxon England, c.450-700, in BAR International Series 1410, p. 59 fig. 5.14 no. 4.

A fragment of a copper alloy object of uncertain date. The fragment is curved in plan and is oval in cross-section. One face of the object is decorated with a curvilinear or wave-like pattern with each 'wave' facing the opposite way. It is likely that this pattern would have repeated. The object tapers in width at one end measuring 6mm in width and is wider at the opposite end which measures 11mm in width.
Dimensions: 15mm in length, 11mm in width, 3mm thick, 2.1g
The object has a mid-green patina and both the front and rear of the object is silvered. Due to the fragmentary nature of this object its exact date and type are unknown. However the patina and style suggest that an Early Medieval date is possible and that is is no later than post-medeival.

The precise function of these fragments is unclear, but the wedge-shaped cross-section suggests that they do not derive from a finger-ring. Possibly they derive from some kind of collar for a domed boss or setting. Alternatively they could have come from a ring decorating the grip of sword. A number of swords categorised as Petersen's Type L (Petersen 1919, 112-16) feature silver ring-like grip mounts decorated with Trewhiddle Style ornament. Most appear to have been flat in section, but one of the four gold grip mounts found in the Bedale Hoard has a more domed shape but is narrower in height (PAS database YORYM-CEE620; Treasure case 2012 T373).
The use of the Trewhiddle Style provides a broad dating of between the ninth and early tenth centuries.
Date:
Ninth to early tenth century.
Conclusion:
The object fulfils the Treasure Act (1996) in that it is more than 300 years old and has a precious metal content exceeding 10%.

Two non-joining fragments of an unidentified cast silver artefact. The fragments are rectangular and curved in form with a wedge-shaped cross-section. Both fragments are broken at each end.
The concave inner faces are plain and the convex outer faces are decorated with Trewhiddle style ornament. Fragment 1 (left side of image) shows a crouching beast inside an arched panel or arcade, its head looking backwards and biting its own tail, which laces up from beneath its body. Probable remains of niello are visible around the creature's tail and hind legs. To the right of this panel is a pointed triquetra, beside which is part of another motif possibly inside another panel. Fragment 2 (right side of image) shows another arched panel or arcade containing two pointed leaves with lobed terminals at the top of the arch and tendrils sprouting from their base. This panel is flanked by pointed triquetrae, complete on the left and partially lost on the right.
