A lead alloy object of uncertain function. The object is oval in plan and is decorated on one face with a flower-like motif. The decoration is typical of similar decoration on medival and post-medieval tokens. The rear of the object has an irregular bulbous projection. This may have been intended to be a handle however has the appearance of a miss-cast object.
Possible functions include a miss-cast token or button.
The object has a dark grey patina and is in fair condition.

A piece of copper-alloy morphologically similar to the shape of a flat axehead, possibly casting waste from a manufacturing process. The object is roughly pear shaped in silhouette, with a rough texture that appears to be partly from corrosion and partly from the natural grain of the metal.

A complete copper alloy object of uncertain date and function. The object consists of a long hook, measuring 85mm in length before it curves, tapering in width to a rounded point. The hook is circular in cross-section. At the top of the object the hook expands and flattens to form an integral loop. The loop has an internal diameter of 14mm.
The object has a mid-green patina and is undecorated. It is in fair condition.
Dimensions: 85mm in length, 20mm in width (at the loop), 8.60g.
The exact function of the object is unknown however the form and lack of decoration suggests it was utilitarian. A post-medieval date is likely.

An incomplete copper alloy object, probably dating to the Early Medieval period. The object is rectangular in plan and cross-section. One long edge is incomplete due to ancient breaks and has a slight rectangular projection in the centre. Along the opposite long edge is a pierced sub-oval projection, which projects at a right angle to the body of the object.
The front of the object is decorated with a rectangular recessed panel. The panel is infilled with transverse decoration of ridges and grooves and is gilded. To the rear of the object two circular possible rivet holes are visible, one towards each end of the object. Each hole is infilled with corrosion. The object has a mid-green patina.
Dimensions: 30mm in length, 11mm in width, 1.5mm thick, 5.35g
A similar object has been recorded from Winchester on the PAS database as a harness fitting, see HAMP-90FE07. The record notes: Alex Bliss and Jo Ahmet comment that, apart from the projecting loop, the object is very similar to Fern, C. 2005; The archaeological evidence for equestrianism in early Anglo-Saxon England, c.450-700, in BAR International Series 1410, p. 59 fig. 5.14 no. 4.

An lead alloy object of uncertain function. The object is circular in plan and is D-shaped in cross-section. The flat face is rough and uneven with no visible pitting.
Due to its undiagnostic nature it cannot be dated closely however the condition of the lead suggests a Post-Medieval date is likely.
The object may have functioned as a palm guard however there are no diagnostic features. Palm guards were for use by a leather worker to protect the palm whilst stitching. Bailey (1995, 64-65) dates such objects to the 17th century onwards.

An incomplete copper alloy object of uncertain function, probably dating from the medieval to the post-medieval period.
The object is sub-circular in plan with a wide rearward projecting hook at one end. At the opposite straight edged end of the object are two rounded projections which curve inwards and may have joined. The majority of the surface decoration has been obscured with corrosion however where the corrosion hasn't taken hold gilding is visible on each face.
At the junction between the hooked tab and the body of the object is a double moulded inverted V-shaped ridge. Above this two curvilinear mouldings curve round from each edge of the outer face and terminate in abutting swirls.
The rear of the object is undecorated and corroded however gilding is visible along the upper edge. In the centre of the reverse is a circular pit, infilled with corrosion which may once have been a perforation.

A copper alloy object of uncertain date and function. The object is U-shaped in plan with zoomorphic duck or bird terminals. Extending down from the centre of the object is a circular-sectioned shaft, measuring 3mm thick, which appears to be hollow and is soil filled.
The birds are each identical with open mouths and rounded beaks and circular annulet eyes. At the top of each head is an undulating raised ridge. The back of the bird's heads appears to have once joined each other at this ridge. Surrounding the eyes the surface is stained red, this may possibly be the remains of degraded enamel.

A lead alloy possible weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The lower face of the object is undecorated, flat and has a dark waxy grey patina. The upper face of the object has a rough dark brown iron patina which is decorated with raised pellets. In the centre of the object there is a circular very slight depression measuring 10mm in diameter. This depression is mid-grey in colour.
Dimensions: 29mm in diameter, 6mm thick, 25.7g
The shape of the object, decoration and central depression is suggestive of this being an unfinished spindle whorl. However the combination of iron and lead to create a spindle whorl is unusual. As such the exact function of this object is unknown. The condition of the object and patina suggest that a post-medieval date is likely.

A copper-alloy unidentified object of Unknown date and uncertain function.
This 'Y'-shaped hollow object has three cylindrical arms. One arm is longer than the other two and each arm swells towards their terminal ends. Each of the arms has a small circular longitudinal perforation, suggesting that it could have been threaded onto a relatively thin string or strings, perhaps to hold them in place and distribute them evenly. A fragment of a copper alloy object of uncertain date. The fragment is curved in plan and is oval in cross-section. One face of the object is decorated with a curvilinear or wave-like pattern with each 'wave' facing the opposite way. It is likely that this pattern would have repeated. The object tapers in width at one end measuring 6mm in width and is wider at the opposite end which measures 11mm in width.
Dimensions: 15mm in length, 11mm in width, 3mm thick, 2.1g
The object has a mid-green patina and both the front and rear of the object is silvered. Due to the fragmentary nature of this object its exact date and type are unknown. However the patina and style suggest that an Early Medieval date is possible and that is is no later than post-medeival.

A fragment of a zoomorphic object of uncertain date and function. The object has a sub-triangular body which is sub-rectangular in cross-section. The body of the object divides at the top terminating with two rounded projections or ears. The ears are concave on the outer face of the object and convex at the rear. Between the ears on the 'head' of the object is a projecting snout which is lozenge shaped in cross-section. The snout is almost complete however any surface detail has been lost with the patina, probably due to abrasion from within the plough soil. The lower part of this face of the object is undecorated.
At the rear of the object is a sub-rectangular projection which has been damaged both in ancient and recent times. This projection probably functioned as an attachment to a larger object, possibly a vessel. There are no rivets. The object has a thick dark green to brown patina with adhering traces of iron corrosion attached. The object itself is not magnetic. Where the patina has been damaged, such as on the rear of the object's ears, the surface is a mid-green which is pitted.
The patina and condition of this object suggests that a middle Bronze Age to late Iron Age is likely. However an exact parallel has not yet been found. Another possibility is that this object is a fragment from a medieval zoomorphic candle holder such as HAMP-FC7C6A https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/642962 which is similar in form to this object.

Treasure Case: 2016 T1015
Description and discussion: A medieval silver-gilt plaque depicting the Agnus Dei. The plaque is rectangular with a plain border around all four edges. In the centre is the Agnus Dei, facing right and supporting a cross. Short incised lines have been used for texture on the lamb's coat and the background is cross-hatched.
The plaque is fragmentary. There is a small loss to the area left of the lamb's head which measures 7.8mm. Where the silver has been lost there are two breaks, one runs vertically down the border and the other curves along the lamb's leg.
The reverse of the object is plain. The centre of the panel is slightly convex, suggesting that it may have originally been held by a frame. A silver-gilt diptych pendant at the V&A is similar in style although with different iconography (14-1873). The pendant depicts The Man of Sorrows on one side and St James the Great on the other. The panels are fixed in a hinged frame, which opened like a book, with a suspension loop on each wing. It has been dated to the first half of the fifteenth century. This comparison suggests that 2016 T1015 might have originally been part of a similar object. The example in the V&A was acquired from a German collection and thus was catalogued as such. This raises the question of where 2016 T1015 was made.

Dimensions: 8mm wide, and 1mm thick. Weight 4.52g
Discussion: The object has some similarities with so-called broad-band arm-rings of the late 9th and 10th centuries, produced in Viking contexts around the Irish Sea. Such pieces were commonly cut-up as 'hack-silver', valued by weight within a bullion economy. Finds of arm-rings of this type are recorded from Viking hoards in Lancashire and Cheshire, as well as more widely in Viking contexts in Britain and Ireland, and Melling lies in an area of Viking settlement, so the discovery of such an object in the area is not in itself unlikely.
However, there are a number of discrepancies which suggest that the object is either a modern imitation of a Viking artefact, or that it is a modern object of some other function with only a coincidental resemblance to an object of the Viking Age. In terms of its appearance, the width is rather less than most rings of this type, and although other examples of comparable width are recorded, they are thicker. The design is also extremely shallow in comparison with typical punch-marked designs of the type that this resembles. The physical appearance is therefore marginal for identification as a genuine object, although the possibility that it is a very crude and atypical example of the type cannot be completely ruled out.
However, the questionable appearance of the object must be seen in conjunction with its metal content. As indicated in the accompanying report, XRF analysis of the surface reveals a content of 95 % silver and 5% copper, with no trace elements of gold or lead. While not completely unknown in pre-modern silver, the absence of trace elements in a genuine object of the period would be extremely unusual, with less than 1% of analysed silver objects of the period lacking any trace elements.
The evidence of the metal analysis is overwhelmingly in favour of the object being of modern manufacture, and the fact that the appearance is only marginal tends to confirm this. On balance, it therefore appears probably that the object is less than 300 years, and therefore does not constitute treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).

A copper alloy fitting of probable post-medieval date. The object consists of a sub-lozenge shaped upright tab or plate and three attachment arms. The edges of the tab are rounded and measure 5mm thick. Projecting from either side of the base towards the inner face are two flat angled arms. Each arm is pierced with a rivet hole measuring 3mm in diameter. The lower attachment 'arm' projects from the centre of the base of the object and has two pierced or drilled holes for attachment measuring 3mm in diameter. This 'arm' has a flattened pointed terminal.
The function of the object is uncertain however it appears to have been a decorative attachment which would have sat on the rim or edge of the object, possibly a vessel or furniture. The object has a mid-dark green mottled patina. The patina and construction of the object suggests that a post-medieval date is likely.

A copper alloy object of uncertain function and date. The object consists of a copper alloy loop below which is a worn ancient break. The loop has an internal diameter of 5.5mm. Where the body of the object has broken away the break is 'cross-shaped' with two short rounded projections or 'arms' to either side. The object has a light green patina and is pitted in places.
The function and date of this object are currently unknown however the patina and construction of the object suggests that it may be of Roman date.

A copper alloy unidentified object probably dating from the medieval to the post medieval date. The object is bifrucated at one end with a triangular shaped void between each projection. The opposite end of the object is incomplete and forms a U-shape due to the incomplete terminal. Below the incomplete terminal are two horizontal ridges decorated on the outer face with ropework. These ridges have been filed down at the rear of the object.
Possible functions include a drop handle such as DENO-2817C7 or YORYM-914600 however these are usually not as curved in profile.

An incomplete lead alloy impression of a coin. The impression in the object is of a penny of George III, (1760-1820). The legend reads GEORBIUS III D G REX; surrounding the laureate bust of the king facing right. The reverse of the object is undecorated. The object has a raised rim.
The object has been bent and the edges damaged probably due to the plough. It has a dark brown patina beneath which is a dark grey surface where it has been damaged.
The object may have been used for forging coins and so will presumably have been made while the coin itself remained in circulation. It may however also occur due to boredom of someone making the impression while idle rather than for a specific purpose.
Similar examples of impressions made from coins include WILT-3CFF6A, LEIC-5D9262 and WILT-86ADD0 .

A copper alloy fragment of uncertain function of probable late medieval to post-medieval date. The fragment consists of an incomplete scallop shaped terminal and rectangular arm. The scallop terminal has six decorative grooves. The top of the central segment of the scallop is incomplete. At the base of the scallop is a transverse double groove. The object then narrows forming a rectangular arm which is a thin pointed oval in cross-section. The rear of the object is undecorated and there are no traces of solder or evidence of attachment. The object has a smooth dark green patina on each surface.
A direct parallel for this fragment has not been found however it does bear similarities to a stirrup recorded from Holt, see LVPL-EF4D47 https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/755475
