A copper alloy unidentified object of possible Roman date. The object is irregular in plan and may be in the form of an animal such as a dolphin or a dragon. The object has a curved and pointed 'head' from the top of which is a triangular projection. Behind the 'head' is a circular hole measuring 4mm in diameter for attachment. The object has a triangular arch at the back and curves round where it terminates in a possible tail. The 'tail' is encrusted with a brown corrosion, probably iron, and what appears to be the remains of an iron rivet attached. The surface of the object is …

A copper alloy zoomorphic object of uncertain function. The object has a circular perforated fitting the hoop of which is sub-rectangular in cross-section. From this extends a long rectangular sectioned 'neck' with a zoomorphic snake-like terminal. The animal head has an open mouth with tongue projecting and ridged brows. The details of the face are worn. From the opposite side of the hoop an incomplete sub-rectangular projection extends. This may have formed a symmetrical terminal with zoomorphic head when complete. The object has a mid-green patina and is in fair condition. Dimen…

A fragment of a copper alloy object of uncertain date. The fragment is curved in plan and is oval in cross-section. One face of the object is decorated with a curvilinear or wave-like pattern with each 'wave' facing the opposite way. It is likely that this pattern would have repeated. The object tapers in width at one end measuring 6mm in width and is wider at the opposite end which measures 11mm in width. Dimensions: 15mm in length, 11mm in width, 3mm thick, 2.1g The object has a mid-green patina and both the front and rear of the object is silvered. Due to the fragmentary nat…

A copper alloy and gilded fitting of Medieval date, of uncertain function. The object consists of an arm, which is D-shaped in cross-section, and a semi-circular incomplete 'frame'. The arm flattens towards its terminal end where it turns at a 90 degree angle and terminates with a rounded end which is pierced with a regular circular hole. The hole has an internal diameter of 3mm and probably held a rivet. Towards the other end of the arm is a large rounded 'bossed' rivet which remains in-situ. This measures 4.5mm in width and 5mm in height. The arm then separates and narrows forming a…

A copper alloy fragment of uncertain function of probable late medieval to post-medieval date. The fragment consists of an incomplete scallop shaped terminal and rectangular arm. The scallop terminal has six decorative grooves. The top of the central segment of the scallop is incomplete. At the base of the scallop is a transverse double groove. The object then narrows forming a rectangular arm which is a thin pointed oval in cross-section. The rear of the object is undecorated and there are no traces of solder or evidence of attachment. The object has a smooth dark green patina on eac…

An incomplete lead alloy impression of a coin. The impression in the object is of a penny of George III, (1760-1820). The legend reads GEORBIUS III D G REX; surrounding the laureate bust of the king facing right. The reverse of the object is undecorated. The object has a raised rim. The object has been bent and the edges damaged probably due to the plough. It has a dark brown patina beneath which is a dark grey surface where it has been damaged. The object may have been used for forging coins and so will presumably have been made while the coin itself remained in circulation. It…

A lead alloy object of uncertain type and function. The object is conical with a flat hollow base and rounded top. The object appears to be anthropomorphic in style however is crudely made and it is therefore uncertain if this is a deliberate style or not. Either side of the 'head' are two semi-circular lugs or 'ears'. In the centre of one face of the object is a long pointed triangular projection which may form a possible nose. Either side of this is a single circular pit which may represent eyes however they are uneven with the right (viewed facing) 'eye' being higher than that on t…
