A lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval date. The object is circular in plan and bi-conical with a central circular perforation. Each face is decorated with a moulded linear pattern which is worn. On one outer edge of the object a spur remains attached. This is usually filled down and removed after casting.

This spindle whorl is unusual as commonly, examples of conical spindle whorls are not usually decorated on each face while those which are bi-conical are usually decorated on each face. The object has a light white patina.

A copper alloy spindle whorl of Roman to later Medieval date (1100 - 1500 AD). The object is circular in plan and bi-conical. It has a central circular perforation measuring 9mm in diameter. Both sides of the object have been decorated with raised worn lines which radiate down from the perforation.
The main body of the object is surrounded by a sub-oval sectioned band. This outer band joins the main body of the spindle whorl via eight lentoid sectioned 'spokes', resulting in seven sub-rectangular perforations, or openwork decoration, around the central piece and one which is filled…

A lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date. The object is circular in plan and bi-conical. In the centre of the object is a circular perforation with an internal diameter of 9mm. The central perforation has been pulled out of shape on each face, probably due to plough damage. There is no visible decoration remaining. Each surface is heavily abraded probably due to movement within the plough soil and the patina has been largely removed from one face. The spindle whorl has a light brown patina and is dark grey in places.

The object is crudely made and has a mid-white patina. There is no visible decoration. Weights of this type are notoriously difficult to date when found outside of a datable archaeological context. Similar examples have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1000-1500.

Cast lead spindle whorl dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500AD). It is circular in plan, flat, and rectangular in cross-section. The object has a regular central circular perforation. The upper surface is decorated with thin incised lines which radiate out from the perfection. They are not very well defined due to ware. The lower surface is uneven and there is no visible decoration. The surface of the spindle whorl is pitted. It has a mottled brownish white patina.
