A copper alloy signet finger ring with engraved bezel of probable Post-Medieval or early Modern date (1650 - 1750 AD). The hoop is oval in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The hoop flares (expands) at the shoulders of the ring to form the bezel. The bezel is oval in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The outer face of the bezel bears an engraved design of a tall ship with three masts within a shield shaped border. This would have been used as a personal or merchants seal matrix. Below the ship undulating lines represent waves. The three masts are positioned evenly alon…

A cast copper alloy finger ring dating to the Medieval period. The object is 'stirrup' shaped with a slender hoop rising to a pointed bezel. At the top of the bezel is an oval recess for a setting, now missing. The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and is incomplete. One break is worn and rounded suggesting it occurred during antiquity while the other is rough and due to more recent damage. This ring is similar to examples from London (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 326, refs: 1608, 1609). It is suggested that this form was popular from the mid-12th to the mid-15th century. However, they…

A complete copper alloy Roman finger ring probably dating from the late Iron Age to Early Roman period. The object is formed of a coiled wire probably dating to the 1st century BC - 2nd century AD. The finger-ring is circular in plan and formed from an oval sectioned wire that has been looped around in a spiral three times. The terminals are both flattened but show no sign of an uneven break, suggesting they are complete. One terminal has been bent backwards and pushed inside the hoop. Where it starts to turn inwards the object has been damaged and the patina missing. Here the wire me…
