A early-medieval contemporary copper-alloy imitation of an early penny (sceat) of Series J (type 37; Naismith Series Ja) dating to c. AD710-25. Ref: Naismith 2017: table 4, p 78; Gannon 2013: 115-6, nos 481-5.
The coin is corroded and in poor condition, chipped and abraded around the edge with the design surviving in patches of thin silver wash.

An early-medieval copper-alloy styca of Aethelred II of Northumbria (probably first reign, 840 - 844), moneyer: Odilo. Ref: Pirie 1996.
The obverse central motif on the reverse is a cross pattee (Pirie motif 1), on the reverse a cross of pellets (Pirie motif 6) .
The spelling of Aethelred appears to be EDILRED (L inverted) placing it into Pirie's group C although Odilo is not listed for this group,
