A copper alloy nummus of Constantius II, (AD 337-361). Reverse: [PROVIDENTIAE CAES]; Camp gates with two turrets, star above. Reece period 16, AD 324-377. The coin has a large circular perforation with an internal diameter of 3.5mm. Above the perforation a sub-triangular shaped wedge has been removed from the edge of the coin. At the angle of the removed wedge is a regular linear cut which runs down to the jaw of the Emperor. The cut and missing wedge appear to be deliberate rather than the result of plough damage.

Mint of Arles RIC VII, p. 262, no. 257. Note there is a dot after CONSTAN in obverse legend. Probably an error. It might be that the die-engraver was about to cut another letter, but realised it needed to be on the right side of the head.
