A copper alloy dolphin brooch probably Roman (see Hattat's Visual Guide Fig 157 - 160 for similar). The one wing which remains is tubular, but semi-circular in cross-section with a ridge at the end. The second wing has been lost. The head of the brooch rises up to form a typical dolphin profile, and then tapers down forming the bow. The bow has broken at the bottom. A copper alloy late Iron Age or Roman penannular brooch dating to the first century BC or AD. The frame is circular in cross-section. The terminal ends are spirally coiled outwards from the frame and on the same plane, turning three times. The pin survives and is mobile. It is a strip of copper alloy bent around the frame tapering to a point and intended to rest between the terminals. The pin is circular in cross-section. The brooch tapers from the damaged head in width towards the foot. A vertical decorative panel runs down the centre of the object which is decorated with transverse grooves. Beneath the loop is a small projection. The pin has a mid-green patina. The coin is a silver gros tournois of Philip IV, King of France (1285-1307), a relatively large silver coin for the period. An almost complete copper alloy Colchester derivative, rearhook with fantail brooch dating to the eatrly Roman period. The wings are tubular and hollow, the spring and pin missing. The bow rises up and arches out from the wings before expanding in width towards the foot. Each side of the bow is decorated with a raised vertical rib running from the head to the foot of the object. The ridges are notched. At the rear of the object, the catchplate is almost complete and measures 12mm in length. The object has a smooth dark green patina and is slightly pitted in places.
