An incomplete finger ring of probable post-medieval date. The ring has an oval expanded bezel and broad shoulders. Below the shoulders each side is rounded where it terminates. At the rear of the object a thin rectangular band is soldered on to the bezel and would probably have continued past the shouders forming a simple hoop. The band measures 15mm in lenght (which is curved) and 4mm in width. The bezel is decorated within an oval depression and depicts a scene which is too worn to decipher. It does not appear to be a monogram or lettering. The construction of the ring is unusual wi…

Roman silver finger-ring of Henig Type XI, the hoop slightly crushed and edges dented. The slender hoop expands to form triangular cambered shoulders, bordered by a line of dot-punching which is also used on the flat bezel to define a square panel. Within the panel are three incised letters - ToT, the central o tiny in comparison to the flanking T's which have flamboyant serifs at their foot in the form of an inverted V. That device is very commonly employed on TOT rings (Daubney 2010, Figs 9-10). The inscription is an abbreviation of the god name Totatis. As Daubney has shown (Daubne…

A silver finger ring in the form of a strap or miniature belt. It has fractured across the band at one point, no gilding is evident. The hoop, which has a fracture across it, has a band width of 6.3mm, an internal diameter of 22.2 x 19mm and weight of 5.844g. The finger ring has a form typical of a nineteenth century date. The popular form was made by a range of manufacturers, including Spiers (Hart 1978, 133). Details of the strap slide vary, and some have buckle loops. This ring is of nineteenth-century date and therefore as it is not at least 300 years old is not treasure under …

Description: tiny silver ring, the bezel divided into three with vertical lines, each division decorated with a lozenge and dot. The ring is slightly conical in shape, being wider on one side than the other suggesting that it may be some kind of fitting. If it is a ring it is for a child. Discussion: This ring gas been examined by British Museum curators (Early Medieval, Medieval and Post-Medieval specialists) who have been unable to confirm a date or function for this ring. Given that both function and date are uncertain we are unable to confirm that it is over 300 years old. The…

An inscribed ring, silver gilt (?). Plain on one side, the other inscribed in relief ONCE MYNE AND EVER THYN with three crosses. The plain surface is very slightly curved, suggesting that the surface with the inscription is inside. The ring has been straightened and appears to have been repaired (repair located between TH and YN of the inscription 'THYN'). This ring does not correspond to any of the posy rings in the British Museum collections, which have exteriors that are either plain or decorated with inscriptions on the inside. This is therefore a puzzling example which ma…
