Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete silver dress fastener. Cast as a single component, the body is sub-traingular in plan and on one end projects a rounded attachment loop. Extra casting material is added in the shape of an X on one side to reinforce the narrowing of the fastener between the body and the attachment loop. The other end of the object comes to a blunt point which is flanked by two unevenly sized eyelets. The edges of the body have a scalloped effect, now mostly worn away. The fastener appears to fall into Read's Early post-medieval Class H, Type 4 (Read 2008, 122), other examples of which …

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver hooked tag with central panel decorated with a Trewhiddle-style animal. Description: Hooked tag with a basically drop-shaped plate, with rounded projections at the upper corners, each perforated with a circular sewing hole. The plate has an elegant concave taper towards the base to meet a small but complete backwards-bending hook. The panel of engraved ornament is set inside an undecorated frame and consists of a single, very neatly made, Trewhiddle-style animal in flat counter-relief, whose head points towards the hook and so is best viewed with the sewing holes held to…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Silver strap-end of Thomas's Class A, type 1, originally decorated in Trewhiddle style, but later re-worked to depict a human figure, perhaps imitating a 'Heiligenfibel' or 'Saint' brooch. The original strap-end is extremely well made. It has a split attachment end, although the two halves are now pressed closely together with no gap in between and indeed appear never to have been apart. The attachment end is shaped around two very small rivet holes, c. 0.8mm in diameter, with a tiny point in between. A fan- or pelta-shaped motif below this has a central drop-shaped fi…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A silver artefact roughly triangular in shape. Possibly a mount with two studs on the back for attachment to leather or textile. Central square hole, on the front curved flange near the square hole with two triangular compartments of floral decoration. Possibly a mount for a belt (?). The object is well made and the floral design may suggest an early 16th century date. The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Dora Thornton

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver finger ring with flat-section hoop expanding to the front. There is some warping of the metal to the back of the hoop. To the front are the faint remains of a punched octagonal shape. On either side are two vertical grooves with incised lines and pellets extending to the shoulders. It is stylistically comparable to 2004 T62 in Treasure Annual Report 2004, p.153, which was declared to be not Treasure and dated to late-17th/early-18th century. Therefore, this ring is classed as not Treasure.
