Treasure Case: 2016 T1017 A post-medieval silver open thimble of probable 17th century date. The body of the thimble is formed from a strip of sheet metal, wrapped around to form a cylinder. Description: Silver strap-end of Thomas's Class A, type 1, originally decorated in Trewhiddle style, but later re-worked to depict a human figure, perhaps imitating a 'Heiligenfibel' or 'Saint' brooch. The original strap-end is extremely well made. It has a split attachment end, although the two halves are now pressed closely together with no gap in between and indeed appear never to have been apart. The attachment end is shaped around two very small rivet holes, c. 0.8mm in diameter, with a tiny point in between. A fan- or pelta-shaped motif below this has a central drop-shaped fi…

A silver seal matrix dating from the 17th or early 18th century. The matrix face is oval and the conical handle has six facets. The terminal of the handle is an openwork tri-lobed suspension loop, the top loop of which is incomplete. There is a thick hexagonal double collar between the loop and the shaft. The matrix face has a beaded border and the central design is of a crown over a heart pierced by two crossed arrows. There is a very small rounded symbol in each angle of the arrows, except the angle filled by the crown. These are probably intended to be drops of blood, mak…

Silver hooked tag with central panel decorated with a Trewhiddle-style animal. Silver finger ring with flat-section hoop expanding to the front. There is some warping of the metal to the back of the hoop. To the front are the faint remains of a punched octagonal shape. On either side are two vertical grooves with incised lines and pellets extending to the shoulders. It is stylistically comparable to 2004 T62 in Treasure Annual Report 2004, p.153, which was declared to be not Treasure and dated to late-17th/early-18th century. A silver artefact, roughly triangular in shape. Possibly a mount with two studs on the back for attachment to leather or textile. Central square hole, on the front curved flange near the square hole with two triangular compartments of floral decoration. Possibly a mount for a belt (?). The object is well made and the floral design may suggest an early 16th century date. The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Dora Thornton

An incomplete silver dress fastener. Cast as a single component, the body is sub-traingular in plan and on one end projects a rounded attachment loop. Extra casting material is added in the shape of an X on one side to reinforce the narrowing of the fastener between the body and the attachment loop. The other end of the object comes to a blunt point which is flanked by two unevenly sized eyelets. The edges of the body have a scalloped effect, now mostly worn away.
