Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
Two non-joining fragments of an unidentified cast silver artefact. The fragments are rectangular and curved in form with a wedge-shaped cross-section. Both fragments are broken at each end.
The concave inner faces are plain and the convex outer faces are decorated with Trewhiddle style ornament. Fragment 1 (left side of image) shows a crouching beast inside an arched panel or arcade, its head looking backwards and biting its own tail, which laces up from beneath its body. Probable remains of niello are visible around the creature's tail and hind legs. To the right of this panel is…

Object type: STYLUS
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Partly gilded silver stylus, now bent and incomplete. The eraser is spatulate, flaring with straight sides to a wide triangle. The edges of the eraser's end are wholly or substantially missing, although there is a short length of what may be a deliberate border groove at the left-hand corner and this may mark a small fragment of original edge, which may have been convex. There is also a similar groove along the left-hand side of the eraser, but its decorative nature is doubtful as it is not very well made, there is no matching groove on the opposite side, and it runs awkwardly onto th…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published
Description: Silver strap-end of Thomas's Class A, type 1, originally decorated in Trewhiddle style, but later re-worked to depict a human figure, perhaps imitating a 'Heiligenfibel' or 'Saint' brooch.
The original strap-end is extremely well made. It has a split attachment end, although the two halves are now pressed closely together with no gap in between and indeed appear never to have been apart. The attachment end is shaped around two very small rivet holes, c. 0.8mm in diameter, with a tiny point in between. A fan- or pelta-shaped motif below this has a central drop-shaped fi…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Flintshire

Description
Silver strap-end with incised zoomorphic designs, set against a niello background. The sides of the strap-end are of slightly convex form, and the border is notched to form a coarsely beaded band. The split attachment end has two circular rivet holes (one retaining its rivet), below which is a centrally placed, incised, trilobate palmette motif. There is a main centrally placed panel of two intertwined sinuous creatures with forelegs, heads in profile with single ears and dots for eyes, whose bodies have devolved into ribbon-like interlace. Each beast bites the body of th…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Cast silver mount dating to the Early Medeival period. The object is oval in plan. The upper surface is decorated with Trewhiddle style decoration. There are four beasts, two above and two below, within an oval border. The heads of the beasts are turned backwards and they hold their tails in their mouths. There are two circular perforations on either side of the object which would have been for attachment. The sides of the object are crudely inscribed with lettering (HNHVIDHLA).
Report by Dr Sonja Marzinzik:
Oval silver mount with niello inlay and a rim that may suggest that th…

A silver Early Medieval dress hook, Read's Class A, Type 2. Treasure Case:
Description: A complete silver early medieval hooked tag. It has a roughly circular plate, undecorated with two small circular holes set next to each other near to the upper edge. The hook projects from the centre of the lower edge and curves backward abruptly to terminate in a sharp point.
Discussion: This style of hooked tag with a single sharp hook has been broadly dated to the 8th to 11th centuries AD, although Read (2008, 5) believes that the circular form may have developed later than the triangular…

Silver hooked tag with central panel decorated with a Trewhiddle-style animal.
Description:
Hooked tag with a basically drop-shaped plate, with rounded projections at the upper corners, each perforated with a circular sewing hole. The plate has an elegant concave taper towards the base to meet a small but complete backwards-bending hook. The panel of engraved ornament is set inside an undecorated frame and consists of a single, very neatly made, Trewhiddle-style animal in flat counter-relief, whose head points towards the hook and so is best viewed with the sewing holes held to the …

This report concerns a hoard of Anglo-Saxon silver pennies found on farmland near Preston, Lancs on March 14th, 2010. The coins were discovered by Alan Reynolds, while metal detecting. The precise find-spot is recorded, but it has been agreed that this will only be identified as 'near Preston' for public purposes.
The coins are all of a single type, the CRVX type of Æthelræd II, king of England (978-1016), issued in the 990s. There are three complete coins, substantial fragments of two more, and smaller fragments of a further two. The coins were found in fairly close proximity, w…
