A post-Medieval Irish copper-alloy 'gun money' shilling of James II (1685-1691 AD), dated 1690 on coin and minted in April at Dublin or Limerick. Spink no: 6582D
Obverse: IACOBVS II DI GRATIA; laureate and draped bust left. Reverse: 1690 . MAG . BR . FRA . ET . HIB . REX; Crown with two sceptres crossed behind, in each quarter XII//I/R//MAY: (XII = denomination).
These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
