Fragment of Samien ware dating to the Roman period (45-410AD). The fragment is from the centre of the base of a vessel. It is sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in profile. The fabric is very hard is light orange in colour and has an orange/red 'satin' gloss slip on both the inner and outer surface. The base is stamped with the inscription [C]OMPRINNIM which is the stamp of the potter Comprinnvs. The fragment was produced in Lezoux. The base is stamped with the inscription MAXM which is the stamp of the maker Maxm. The fragment was produced in Argonne, France. The fabric is very hard is light orange in colour and has an orange/red 'satin' gloss slip on both the inner and outer surface. In "Roman Samian Pottery in Britain", Peter Webster (1996) notes that red-slip coated samian ware, made mainly in Gaul and Germany, was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd centuries.
