Treasure Case 2022 T851 Description:  A complete silver gilded eye piece from a hook and eye fastener dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1700). The body of the piece is broadly heart shaped, with sewing loops either side of the point of the loop and a larger loop at the top of the heart. The large hoop is where the hook from the other part of the fastener would have previously been attached. The outer edges which form the shape of the heart consist of foliate branches.  The central design of the piece is reminiscent of an urn with a flat top and rounded body.…

A cast copper alloy small axe of Early Bronze Age date. It is of narrow butted form with slight low flanges to either side. The relatively straight sided body broadens to the blade, which is 3.41mm thick. There an indication of the beginings of a stop ridge. The surfaces are all severely affected by invasive corrosion with marked pitting. The butt is slightly chipped. A medium brown patina is visible on many of the surfaces invaded by the dark green corrosive products that are visible on all surfaces. It is 81.52mm in length, 32.50mm wide and 9.36mm thick. A silver Saint Eadmund memorial penny, c.AD 895-910. Obverse, +OARI.VS (A inverted), in centre A. Reverse, +O_IICIS; cross pattee. Memorial coinage by Danish settlers. The inscriptions are blundered, which is typical of the later coins within the St Edmund series. On both sides the final letter is an S on its side, which is not unusual in this period.

Cast bronze button dating to the Post-Medieval period, (1500-1700). It is circular in plan with a sub-oval attachment loop on the reverse. The button is decorated with a central pimple and wavy lines which radiate out from the centre. The reverse is flat and has an integral attachment loop. It has a mid brown/green patina. A similar example is fig. 7.8, p23 Bailey, (2004).

A complete cast copper alloy (bronze) short flanged axe of Middle Bronze Age dating, probably of the Acton Park I metalwork assemblage and dating from c.1700 to c. 1500BC. The axe has a shield shaped pattern below a very slight stop ridge, and raised flange facets. The blade of the object expands outwards to a crescentic cutting edge. The cutting edge measures 1mm thick. In profile the blade is sub-triangular with the widest section being before the stop ridge. A cast copper alloy forked spacer from a composite strap end dating to the Medieval period. The object is circular with a forked projection at the top. One of the forked prongs is incomplete. The terminal end is decorated with a projecting collared acorn knop. The object has a mid brown patina and is in fair condition. A similar example can be found in Egan and Pritchard, (1991), p141, no.651 and 652. The object can be dated from c. AD 1350-1400.

The base is stamped with the inscription MAXM which is the stamp of the maker Maxm. The fragment was produced in Argonne, France. The fabric is very hard is light orange in colour and has an orange/red 'satin' gloss slip on both the inner and outer surface. In "Roman Samian Pottery in Britain", Peter Webster (1996) notes that red-slip coated samian ware, made mainly in Gaul and Germany, was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd centuries.

A cast copper alloy possible heraldic stud of medieval date. The stud has a lozenge shaped head. There is a small amount of black enamel remaining on the outer face of the object. From the reverse a rectangular attachment stud projects. Both of the sides of the stud have been broken. The metal has a light brownish-green patina. A similar example which can be found on the database is YORYM-4D3815.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester Derivative brooch of Roman date, c. AD50-150. The wings are sub-rectangular in plan and are incomplete. The more complete wing is decorated with two vertical raised bands incised with transverse notches. The bow extends out and down from the wings tapering in width to where it terminates in a break above the foot. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy and enamelled Headstud brooch (AD 75-200). Bayley and Butcher Type 'b' (hinged pin and fixed headloop). This brooch is 'T'-shaped in plan and curved in profile. At the head of the brooch there is a stub of an attachment or chain loop. The short wings are sub-rectangular in plan and cylindrical in cross-section. Treasure Number: 2017 T1013 Medieval silver coin brooch. It is a silver coin that has been converted into a brooch by the addition of attachments to one side (current weight: 4.08g, diameter: 29mm). The coin is a silver gros tournois of Philip IV, King of France (1285-1307), a relatively large silver coin for the period. The utilisation of French gros tournois as brooches in this manner is familiar in England at this time, and there have been many finds of similar nature. Cast copper alloy harness pendant dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). It is quatrefoil in plan with a central floral decoration and gilding. The flower consists of six gilded petals. The centre of the flower consists of red enamel. The remains of green enamel can be seen between the flower and the outer border. The raised border and attachment lug are gilded also. There is an integral circular lug at the top of the pendant which would have been used to attach the object to the harness.

Treasure Case: 2016 T942: An incomplete silver thimble of post-medieval date. The thimble has regular pits and a domed crown. The centre of the crown is un-pitted as is a horizontal band running around the centre transacted by three vertical bands to form three crosses. In the centre of each cross is a sexfoil, possibly representing a flower or sunshine. There is no visible maker's mark however the rim is broken on one side.
