A copper alloy pin dating to the Early Medieval period, (400-1066). The head of the pin is sub-rectangular expanding outwards slightly towards the top. The pin head is decorated with two punched dots on each face and one punched dot on each narrow side. There is no visible decoration on the top of the head. The head tapers in width towards the integral shaft. There is no collar at the junction of the head and the shaft. The shaft is oval in cross section and undulating, possibly due to use. The shaft terminates with an ancient break. The shaft measures 2mm in diameter in the centre. …

At the junction between the head and the shaft is a circumferential collar. The head of the pin is undecorated and the object has a dark green patina. Dimensions: 34mm in length, 7mm in width (of head), 2.8g. Pins of this type are typically dated to the mid-late Anglo-Saxon period, c.700-820AD.

A fragment of a copper alloy pin of Cool group 1, dating to the Roman period. The terminal of the pin consists of, from top to bottom, a globular onion-shaped knob with a circular collars below. The stem is circular in cross-section and terminates just below the head. The object has an olive green patina. Dimensions: 12mm in length, 8mm in width, 2.8g. The form resembles Cool group 1, knob heads. Pins such as this were used throughout the Roman period, (AD43-410). Reference: Cool, H.E.M., 1990 Roman metal hair pins from Southern Britain, 147, 159-160, fig 6, 1-4.

A copper alloy pin dating to the Early Medieval period, (400-1066AD). The head is polyhedral in form (a cuboid with the corners cut off), square in profile and in section and has thirteen faces. Below the head is a worn transverse collar. The shaft is circular in cross-section and measures 30mm in length. A punched ring-and-dot motif decorates five of the faces of the pin head. A copper alloy pin of uncertain date and function. The object is D-shaped in cross-section and both ends have been bent inwards towards the centre of the object. The pin has a mid-green patina and is undecorated. Dimensions: 26mm in length, 4mm in width, 2mm thick, 2.9g The condition of the pin suggests a Roman to medieval date is probable, c.43-1500.

Copper alloy pin dating to the Roman period, (43-410AD). The object has a conical head. The tip of the head is missing due to an old break while one side of the head is chipped due to a recent break. The shaft is cylindrical and tapers towards the tip where it terminates with a break. The top of the shaft is decorated with horizontal parallel grooves on two opposing faces. The object has a dark green patina. A similar example is no.480, p29, Crummy, (1983).

Bone hair pin dating to the Roman period. The object has been carved out of a single piece of bone. It has a conical head. The head is decorated with incised cross-hatching. At the top of the head there is a projecting lobe. There are two pronounced ridges at the top of the neck. Below the ridges is a larger more gradual ridge below which are another two pronounced ridges. The shaft then narrows towards a point at the tip. It is a Crummy type 5.
