A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or loom weight of probable medieval date. It is oval in plan and conical in section with a flat base. All surfaces are undecorated and have an uneven pale grey patina. The central perforation is 6mm in diameter, and is exposed on one side, presumably due to damage. Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the medieval and post-medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. Examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are ty…

A large lead alloy weight of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan and has a central circular perforation and raised rim. The perforation has an internal diameter of 12mm. Each face is undecorated. Dimensions: 61mm in diameter, 15mm thick, 420g. The dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.). They were probably mostly used as net weights, loom weights.
