A cast lead alloy token or tally dating from the late 17th to early 18th century AD (c. AD 1680 - 1710). The token is bifacial with the obverse depicting a horned animal, possibly a cow, advancing left with head facing and tail upright. The body of the animal has cross-hatched patterning and is curved. There is an equal armed cross above the animal's back. The reverse of the token is divided into three sections; the topbpanel has saltires within, the bottom panel has crosses within; the issuer's initials C H are between. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy heraldic horse harness mount or pendant. The mount does not have a suspension loop nor any other means of attachment, however it is possible this has broken and was the reason for loss. The mount can be described as a heater shield upon which is the blazon checky / chequy or and azure. The blue (azure) enamel is quite degraded but remains intact in most cells. Gilding only survives on part of one edge of the mount however it is likely it covered the face of the shield so giving the blazon. The coat of arms may belong to the De Warenne family. John de Warenne (AD 1231 - 1…

A cast copper alloy heraldic strap fitting, probably for a harness strap or belt, dating to the medieval period. The fitting is shield shaped and a thick integral shank on the reverse would have been inserted and secured into a leather strap. The shield bears arms that can be blazoned as: ' (unknown) two fess dancetty, in chief a label of three points gules'. A search of the available heraldic sources has not revealed any arms bearing two fess dancetty, however the arms of Erors de Hetells are the same as the above but with only one fess dancetty. Erors de Hetells appears in th…

A very worn silver soldino, possibly of Doge Leonardo Lauredan of Venice (AD 1501-1521). There are only a few letters visible and the images on both faces are worn blank. A small area of the coin has been bent over, which has preserved the word 'SOLI'. From the late 14th to the 16th century, these small silver coins known as 'galley pennies' circulated widely, but illegally, in England as small coinage was in short supply. They were brought to England by galley men trading wine and other goods, and their name may derive from Galley Quay in Thames Street, London, which …

TREASURE CASE 2017 T1033. Description: An incomplete silver finger ring with intaglio of Roman date, conforming to Henig's Type II and dating from c. AD 43-200. The finger ring is missing the entire lower section of the hoop, which is broadly D-shaped in section and would have been elliptical in plan. The hoop of the finger ring expands from the shoulders in to a flat bezel, set with an oval intaglio of red carnelian. A gold ring, possibly fitting rather than a finger ring. The ring has a sub-rectangular section and is undecorated. It is now distorted into a sub-rectangular shape in plan. There are no maker's marks or hallmarks, nor is there an obvious seam in the band. Post-medieval finger rings are often decorated but even if they are not they usually have a D-shaped cross section and thicker band. It is also seemingly too plain to be of Roman or early-medieval date, so as this ring is generally undiagnostic and out of context it is not possible to securely date it to pre- AD 1714, therefore i…

A copper alloy spiral ring of uncertain date or function. The ring is formed from a rod of copper alloy, circular in cross section, decreasing in size as it turns through three loops to form a hollow loop that tapers in width. There appears to be moulded decoration on the fatter end of the road, feathering or linear effect lines that could be representative of the scales of a snake, as is sometimes seen on 'snake rings' of the Roman period. Rings such as this have been interpreted as finger rings, however, due to the small size of this ring it is likely that it had another func…

TREASURE CASE 2016 T921. A complete gold ring of probably post-medieval to modern date. The shape of this object suggests that this is more likely to be a decorative mount or fitting of some kind rather than a finger-ring, as it does not have the D-shaped cross section usually seen with finger rings. The ring is formed from a strip of gold and has central circumferential beading between teo raised ribs which run around the upper and lower outer edge of the ring. A small copper alloy ring or circular fitting of probable Roman date. The object is formed from a rectangular strip of decorated copper alloy, probably originally part of an early Roman wide-cuff bracelet or similar. The strip is decorated with two rows of moulded decoration of vertical panels between horizontal bands. The strip has been cut and then bent round to form a tube with the two terminal ends touching but not overlapping. The tube / ring is too small for a finger ring (having an internal diameter of only 10mm) so it's more likely to be a fitting, or, as the finder has sug…
