A complete wheel-made vessel, date as yet unknown but probably post-medieval, possibly 16th - 18th century. The vessel is a large storage jar, part glazed (green) from the waist up - the lower half is unglazed. The vessel has two looped handles adhering to the rim and the neck - these are also glazed green. A thin yellow glaze continues a little way inside the vessel, where it changes to a clear glaze, almost as if there are layers of glazing. There is a possible mend in the clay - this is also glazed suggesting it happened during the manufacturing process. The vessel measures 310…

A large upper body sherd of a high medieval domestic cooking vessel, probably from a storage jar. The fabric is fine to medium grained, slightly sandy / gritty with a chalk/limestone temper. The vessel is partially oxidised; the inner wall is light grey to pale buff in colour, while the outside wall is grey in various hues. The rim is not present but a slight everting of the body sherd suggests a possible collar with a seperate rim element, now missing. The curviture of the sherd suggests a complete vessel circumference of c.10cm. This vessel is probably handmade locally. The she…

A fragment of the base of a Roman fineware dish. The fabric is orange in colour and powdery in the hand - the outer slip having deteriorated. The profile of the base sherd indicates that the dish is similar to the 'Curle 23' form of Terra Sigillata, mass produced in central and eastern Gaul, although this sherd may be a domestically produced ware and date from the 1st to 3rd centuries. The sherd is 95.40mm long, 54.45mm wide and 22.82mm thick. It weighs 51.1gms.

The base of a vessel in a hard gritty and sandy grey coarse ware with a pinky-yellow core. There are occasional large fragments of crushed stone / quartz temper. The base sherd has been trimmed down to form a smooth circular disc and the remaining outer edge of the base appears to have a circular groove worn into it; the base sherd appears to have been reused as a runner or pulley. Although it is unclear when this occured, it must have been when the base was still visible to the eye and not buried or contained within a rubbish pit, so it is probably roughly contemporary with the use…
