Externally it is still glazed with a shiny glaze upon which there is the depiction of a human face, painted in green, red and black. The face is in a greeny shade with red eyes, nose and mouth and two red flowers in the "hair". The hair and eyebrows are black. The inside of the sherd is plain with traces of red with two curving lines, whilst the end view of it shows an inner grey core, which is more characteristic of local (Oxford) Roman wares.

A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel, a Samian ware cup, dating to the period AD 145-175. The fabric is fine and hard with a glossy dark red slip on both external and internal surfaces. The base retains some of the pedestal ring. There is a maker's stamp on the base, identified by Paul Booth as die 3a of Albucius II of Lezoux, France, a major centre for Samian production in central Gaul. The form is likely to be a small cup - Dragendorff 33 (see British Museum Collection 1937,0316.2 for a complete example). Many thanks to Paul for his identification of this object.
