Object type: SPOON
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy spoon of Roman date. The object is a Crummy (1983) Type 1 spoon with a round bowl although the circular bowl is incomplete and the stem of the handle is worn and also broken a short distance from the bowl. The spoon has been tinned or possibly silvered however much of this is now missing and the copper alloy base metal is prominant. Similar spoons with the same shaped bowl and rats-tail handle junctions are know from Verulamium, which Crummy (1983:69) dates similar spoons from Colchester to the second half of the first century to second century AD. Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy dress fastener or hooked tag of early-medieval date. The fastener takes the form of a sub-circular plate with two holes for attachement to the garment, and a thin shank with hooked end projecting from the opposing side. In this example the two attachment holes are incomplete but the rest of the fastener is intact. There is the remains of possible decoration on the front of the plate however it is too faint to be able to discern. These fasteners are of Saxon date (7th to 12th century AD) and this example can be catagorised as Read (2008) Class A Type 2. It is simila…

Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy openwork harness fitting, a probable cheek piece from a bridle fitting of the late Early-medieval period (11th century AD). The object is Anglo-Scandinavian in design and is a fragment of a larger fitting. This is likely to be one half of the cheek piece, the other side of the plate was probably symmetrical with a central hole and a projecting arm for the attachment to the leather harness strap (Williams 2007:2). The plate is faintly decorated in what is probably Jellinge Style, with a curled beast apparently consuming its own tail. This was a common de…

A body sherd from a copper alloy cooking vessel, possibly a cauldron and dating from the 12th to 18th century, but probably medieval. The body sherd is of uniform thickness and has no decoration or disgnostic elements. According to Butler, Green and Payne (Finds Research Group Datasheet 41), "From about AD 1100, cast copper alloy vessels...were commonly used for downhearth cooking, with the vessel sitting among the embers or suspended over the fire. All but the poorest medieval or post-medieval households would have had at least one metal cooking vessel....These vessels gradually pas…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy clothing or strap hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The hooked clasp has an oval plate with incomplete hook extending from the base and a single lobe at the opposing end. Interestingly this example has a back plate which is secured to the front plate by a single rivet; it is assumed that this hooked tag acted much like a strap end, and indeed could be considered as such. It likely fitted onto a sword belt or similar. Post-medieval in date, c. 17th century. See Read (2008) 221-222 for similar examples.
