Lead papal bulla of Pope Nicholas IV (1288-1292). Mass: 34.8g, diameter: 38.1mm, thickness of metal 4.6mm. The papal bulla is sub-circular in plan, but slightly distorted, with a concave front and a convex reverse - probably impact damage. There is also a split on the front and on the reverse and an indentation on the front. The front of the papal bulla has a incomplete pellet border, and the inscription SPE (for St Peter) is visible. The design is otherwise unclear on the rough and partially blackened surface (which is otherwise light brown in colour). The reverse is clearer, with a s…

The spearhead is leaf shaped in plan, broken across the socket at the base, with an oval sectioned midrib which tapers towards the tip. In section the wings are triangular. The break does not appear recent based on the surface appearance. Whilst pitted in areas, portions of the surface retain a well developed brown patina.
