An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 5.a1.Plate 49. The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated caps at the terminals. One of the perforated caps is ruptured. A fragment of the axis bar remains attached to the complete perforated cap. This bar would have held the spring and pin (See Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 33-34). An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 5.b1. Plate 50. The wings are semi-cylindrical with incomplete perforated caps at the terminals. There is a crest between the wings, with an open (incomplete?) perforation. There is no axis bar, spring, chord or pin, which would be expected of a complete brooch of this type (see Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 33-34)…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy disc brooch. The front of the brooch features two concentric ribs of decreasing diameter within the disc, and a raised border around the circumference. The inner rib stands in clear relief when the brooch is viewed in profile. The zone within the inner rib is recessed and contains a raised annular collar, around a central cavity, but soil and corrosion products obscure whether this is a central perforation. The two zones between the outermost ribs are decorated with a repeated SSS shaped punched design. A small portion of the outer border and zone …

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Early Bronze Age cast copper alloy developed flat axe. The axehead is 102.23 mm long, with a rounded butt and a body which expands in width towards the blade. There is no butt stop or transverse bevel visible on the body of the axehead, although the original surface has been removed by corrosion. The axehead has gentle flanges at the edges of the body, which are concave in profile and are cast or hammered. In section, one flange is noticeably narrower than the other (the width being a maximum of 10.02mm compared to 11.97mm). It is unclear if this is a consequence of …

A cast copper alloy fragment, probably from an edged blade of unknown type. The fragment is 30.90mm long, with a pronounced but narrow lozenge-section midrib. The blade wings are largely complete, although one wing is bent at the cutting edge. The width of the fragment narrows from 34.87mm to 23.89mm towards the tip which is missing. There is no central cavity visible within the midrib, although the terminals of the midribs are partially obscured by soil. The fragment weighs 18.58g. A lightly pitted dark brown patina is visible on a small area of one of the blade wings, but gener…

Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Incomplete cast gilt copper alloy suspension mount. This is a medieval harness fitting from which a pendant would have been suspended. This mount consists of two arms forming a horizontal bar, a third arm projecting upwards, and a shorter stub facing downwards with two lugs. The pendant would have been suspended by a pin through the lugs. The pin was usually made of iron (Griffiths, 2004, p 62). One of the lugs is ruptured. The three arms have a narrow furrow along the central ridges, ending at a transverse ridge. Beyond these ridges, a bulbous rivet head is set within each of the hor…

Incomplete cast alloy button and loop fastener. The flat head is incomplete, but the straight edges that remain suggest parallels with rectangular headed button and loop fasteners (see Wild, 1970). An annular attachment loop projects from the centre of the rear of the head. When the object is viewed in profile it can be seen that the loop is offset from the head, and rather than running parallel, the loop diverges from the head at a gentle angle. In total the button and loop fastener is 33.17mm long. The head is 15.08mm long and 14.43mm wide. The object weighs 5.47g. The fastener…

FINDSPOT Harlaston, Staffordshire, find (2007 T627) I have examined an item found at Harlaston, Staffordshire. It is a silver coin of Venice, specifically a soldino of Doge Leonardo Loredano (1501-21), which has been converted into an item of jewellery by the addition of a decorative and shaped face covering one side – the side which, presumably, was intended to be on view, with the actual coin face not visible. The most likely interpretation is that it has been made into a button, or maybe some other type of dress fastening. The soldini of early 16th century Venice, espec…

A medieval cast copper-alloy mount. The mount is complete but only traces of the separate rivet remain. The upper section of the mount is decorated with cross hatched grooves and there are small projecting ears towards the upper corners. The upper section is divided from the lower section by a horizontal groove which runs through the central perforation which holds the remains of the rivet. A copper alloy object, possibly an incomplete mount of medieval date. The object consists of a sub-square plate which is slightly convex rather than being entirely flat. The front is decorated with zig-zag designs running between opposite corners forming a cross, and also around the perimeter. The edges and two corners in particular are rather uneven and some material may be missing. The back of the object is plain other than some shallow, narrow linear score marks and a little surface unevenness. The object is similar to record reference WMID-F79F22, which is enamelled. An incomplete Roman copper alloy Dragonesque brooch. The S-shaped body has two terminals which take the form of a head with curved snout, although both heads are incomplete. Bayley and Butcher (2004, p123) identify these as characteristics of the Dragonesque brooch, the heads of which also have large ears and a circular sinking representing the eye. The ears are missing on this example, and the poor surface condition mean that the detail around the area of the eyes is unclear.
