Four red-slip coated ceramic base sherds. Fine orange/brown coloured fabric. Roman. In "Roman Samian Pottery in Britain", Paul Webster (1996) notes that red-slip coated samian ware, made mainly in Gaul and Germany, was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd centuries. Webster also points out that the Gaulish Samian tradition is but one branch of a widespread Roman red-slipped tradition, which did not stop with Gallic samian production, and that samian forms and fabrics were imitated by some British potteries.

Cast copper-alloy trumpet brooch. Roman period (c.AD75-175). Mass: 10.7g; length: 47.7mm; width: 15.7mm; depth: 19.0mm. The incomplete “trumpet-shaped” head is sub-oval in plan with a small projection at the top (from which the now missing separate head-loop would have projected). The reverse of the head is concave, with an incomplete lug and a hook on a median rib, which would have secured the spring and pin mechanism. A Bowles Cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.a. Mass: 6.3g; length: 38.1mm; width: 14.6mm; depth: 16.8mm. The bow is bent, exaggerating the arched profile and altering the original T-shaped plan of the brooch. The semi-cylindrical side-wings have pierced end caps, and there is a rear-facing hook on the head. The spring, pin, axial rod and external chord are all missing. There are plates on each side of the head. The catch-plate retains the pin rest. There is a small, moulded foot, now bent upwards.

Cast copper-alloy Colchester one piece brooch. Late Iron-Age / early Roman period, c.AD25- AD60. Mass: 1.9g; length: 46.8mm; width: 12.7mm; depth: 9.2mm. The brooch has short wings, with the remains of the incomplete spring behind one wing. The narrow bow is circular sectioned and bent, and there is a hook on the head. In her “Roman Brooch Timeline”, Worrell (2007) dates Colchester brooches to AD25-AD60.

Cast lead gilded corpus fragment. Probably medieval. Mass: 24.7g; length: 37.3mm; width: 25.0mm; depth: 7.4mm. The fragment consists of the torso, with breaks at the neck, arms and abdomen. The corpus is asymmetrical, with one shoulder raised above the other and the neck bent to one side. The fragment is convex on the front, with ribbed detail. The reverse is slightly concave. An unidentified deep red coating is evident on parts on the front and more completely on the reverse, over which traces of gilding remain on the front.

Incomplete cast copper-alloy sword belt fitting. Post-medieval, c.16th century. Mass: 5.1g; length: 17.4mm; width: 41.6mm, thickness: 2.2mm. Just over half of the bar mount remains, with two rivet holes - one at the complete end, and one in what would have been the centre of the mount, but is now a broken end. The suspension loops and hooked pendant attachments are missing from the bottom of the bar. Cf. Read, 2001, "Metal Artefacts of Antiquity" p43, Fig 26, No. 373,which Read dates to the 16th century.
