Object type: HOE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast iron socketed hoe/axe type implement, possibly Roman in origin c. 45 - 400 AD. It has a trapezoidal, bladed emerging from the curved socket section with the wider blade edge having a gentle radius, that may be the result of wear. The implement could have been mounted either in-line with the shaft, or conceivably at right angles to that shaft. It is now heavily eroded and with considerable surface fragmentation.
The object/hoe was found in an area of numerous Roman and earlier finds, therefore, it may conceivably precede the Roman occupation. See NLM-B747A1 for a Roman exampl…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy pin or nail cleaner of possible of Roman date (c. 50 - 400) however the appearance of the metal suggests a post-medieval date (c. 1500-1700). The pin has a circular pierced head and may be missing its point element which may have been an ear scoop or nail cleaner. The pin is slightly bent and has a corroded brown/green patina.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast and incised decorated, copper alloy figural mount or pommel of probable post-medieval date. The mount has the form of a draped bust of a probable female, with hands clasped to the front. The head appears to be adorned with an elaborate hair do. The figure has been cast but then extensively incised to reveal a more realistic figure to the front, but the rear simply has a deeply incised cross hatched pattern. There is a clear break point at the foot and as such, its use may be surmised to have been the knop to an accessory, such as a hairpin. Although this item was found near som…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast and worked copper alloy unidentified object, either Roman ( c. 43 - 400 AD) or post-medieval in date (AD 1500-1800). The point and tip of the eye are now missing. The cross section of the shaft at the point end is circular and that morphs into a square cross section at the eye end. There is then a grove, leading into the lower section of the remaining eye. The surface has a mottled light green patina and was located in a field with several Roman finds. This may be a large needle-type object, a toilet implement or possibly a hinged arm for an unidentified larger object.

A group of six lead alloy weights of unknown date c. 40 - 1500 AD. Appearing to be handmade of differing sizes in rolled lead alloy with a central hole, these weights found in proximity, may be fishing net / line related or possibly from a rabbit net or the like. They have a smooth light grey/cream patina of lead oxide and measure from the largest at 22.24mm, down to 8.59mm in length and weighing in, from the largest to the smallest at - 13.4gm, 11.9gm, 9.9gm, 9.1gm, 6.6gm and 6.5gm.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy object of uncertain use and date, the style could suggest Late Iron Age to Early Roman c. -100 - 150 AD as well as medieval (AD 1066-1400). The object consists of two uneven legs of circular cross section, with a right-angled junction. From that junction, a post extends at 45 degrees to the joint and terminated with a collar bead beneath a terminal ball. One leg of the object tapers to a broken fixing/attachment hole, the shorter leg in simply broken in antiquity with no discernible feature. The surface is plain with a rough mid-green patina. As to us…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper mount, possibly a Roman horse harness fitting or pendant, but possibly a much later (medieval) strap hanger. Somewhat triangular or pelta-shaped in plan form, the broad end is semi-circular with concave longitudinal sides. The apex has a small bulge and the broad semi-circular end, perhaps unusually, has the hook and the fixing holes, one of which has lost its outer rim. The fixing holes each have a stamped circle design to one surface. Overall, the surface is a rough mottled brown-green patina. This is perhaps an unusual style for this device and I can find no pa…

A copper alloy rim fragment from a vessel, possibly of Roman to medieval origin c. 50 - 1500 AD. The fragment has a slightly bulbous rim form with a diameter of 4.38mm. There are wheel turning marks to the outer surface finish, perhaps done on a continuous turning lathe contraption known as a great wheel. From a rim chart measurement, the completed dish/bowl, could have had a diameter of around 36cm.
The surface has a dull mid-green patina.

A copper alloy cast and worked awl of uncertain date, but possibly either Roman or medieval /post-medieval. The object has a working tip with a square section to the rear, indicative of having been fitted to a handle. The surface has a mottled green patina with ferrous staining. As the form of these objects did not change for thousands of years it is not possible to date it accurately, however the patina suggests either a Roman or medieval/post-medieval date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small cast lead bi-conical spindle whorl of unknown date. This example is plain with no decorative features but with an interesting attribute consisting of a drilled hole to the centre of one side. It is possible that this modification was an attempt to prevent the weight falling off the spindle by the use of a ‘retaining pin’. It has a large central hole of 11.1mm. The surface has a pale cream lead oxide patina.

A small cast lead, undecorated bi-conical spindle whorl of unknown date. This example is a little different from the usual whorl, being much deeper in form with a central hole of 9.63mm. There is a small cut to one end that is modern and probably caused when excavating the piece which now has a pale cream lead oxide patina.

Probable Axe Head, an iron axe with an unusually long, oblong shaped socket with a split seam. - Axes can be hard to date, stylistically, there is a common theme from the Roman period through to the Post-Medieval. However, the long socket, with the unusual curved butt on this example, are a confusion. The blade, in axe terminology, looks too 'closed' the overall look might suggest a much later date however the split socket is characteristic of late Roman and especially early medieval iron artefacts. Heavy corrosion covers the whole surface. The axe was found in an area of mostly Roman …

A lead biconical Spindle Whorl with designs on both sides and a central hole of 9mm diameter. One side has raised radiate lines whilst the other has 7 raised semi circular petal-like patterns with a dot at the centre of each. The surface of the spindle whorl is well worn. The period may be Roman through to Post Medieval but if the pattern on one side can be interpreted as a rose it is more likely to be medieval or early post-medieval.

A lead spindle whorl of diameter c.28mm, bi-conical in section, with a central hole c.10mm in diameter. Both surfaces are decorated with a raised zigzag or radiating line pattern. It has a teardrop protrusion on one side which looks like a result of the casting process that has not been trimmed. Alternatively it is possibly a net weight.
