This is a hammered silver groat of Edward III (1327-77). This coin is from the forth coinage, pre treaty period of 1351-61 that is then confirmed by the mintmark of cross (3). The coin is most probably type ‘G’ which further restricts the dateline to 1356-61. The obverse has the crowned bust of king facing within a tressure of nine arches and the reverse has the long cross pattee dividing the legends and three pellets in each angle. The coin is in poor condition with much corrosion, leaving a coarse and darkened, but legible, surface.

This is a hammered silver groat of Edward IV from the second reign 1471-83. The obverse has the bust facing with a mintmark of a pierced cross with pellet, that further defines the date to 1477-80. The reverse has the long cross pattée with three pellets to each inner quadrant and CIVITAS LONDON. The coin is clipped and has what looks to be to be fire damage, evidenced by the distortion to a sector of the reverse surface.

A hammered silver groat of Edward III. Possibly of the Fourth Coinage, Pre-treaty period 1351-61. The obverse has the crowned bust facing within a tressure of nine arches. The mintmark is probably the 'cross 1' type. On the reverse the long cross pattée divides the legend and there are three pellets to each central quadrant. The coin has been clipped and parts of the inscription are missing.

This hammered silver coin from the reign of Edward III is a groat. It is probably from the fourth period coinage, (1351-77) and as the legend makes reference to France, it is most likely from the pre-treaty period to 1361. The coin has an annulet in one quarter of the reverse and what is probably an annulet on the breast on the obverse. There are nine arches to the tressure. The coin is badly damaged with perhaps 20% of the rim missing to the right of the bust; the damage looks to have been caused in antiquity. The coin is also heavily clipped.

This is a hammered silver, medieval groat of Edward III. The mintmark, although a little damaged, would appear to be a cross with expanded arms, as mintmark 4. This would place the coin in the fourth coinage – and the pre treaty period of 1356-61. The coin has lost about 25% of the rim, to the right of the bust, probably due to damage over time in the ground. On the reverse, there is a long cross pattée dividing the legends and three pellets in each angle. The obverse has the bust facing within a tressure of arches.

Here we have a very fine example of a Henry VI (1422-61 First Reign) Groat. Another identical coin, in worse condition, was found a few hundred yards north of this example (CPATB5C7D2). This coin, also from the Calais mint, is again from the annulet issue of 1422-27 with annulets by the neck and between two sets of opposing pellets on reverse. It has the initial mark of an incurved pierced cross. The general condition is excellent with complete legends to both the obverse and reverse sides.

Here we have a good example of a Henry VI (1422-61 First Reign) Groat. In this case it is a little more interesting than the run of the mill Groats in that it is from the annulet issue of 1422-27 with annulets by the neck and between two sets of opposing pellets on reverse. A further interest is in the mint, being from Calais with the mintmark of an incurved pierced cross. The general condition is fair although it does appear to have been clipped and the obverse has a greater degree of wear than the reverse.
